I use Lone Wolf V2 and Flat Cat now and here's my chain:

SM57 into Shure -50db attenuator into 1/4" impedence adapter into the Flat Cat compression pedal into the Lone Wolf V2 delay into Kustom KG210 solid state amp with Jensen MOD speakers.

The V2 has always sounded great, and after some quick testing, the Flat Cat sounds amazing with transparency and a nice sweep on the Squash control.

I should be able to plug into any amp with this chain, tube or solid state.

What is the purpose of the -50db attenuator?

I've tried a SM57 without the impedance adaptor to reduce the signal, and I can detect no difference in tone, it's just quieter and gives more clean headroom. I've read other people do that too.

The SM57 was way too loud when I first plugged into the amp. It's a 20W solid state amp. With the attenuator it sounds fine - I don't hear any loss of tone and I can get more sound out of the amp.

I also have a -20db attenuator I can use if -50db is too much.

Yes I see. I found the same. I just wondered why you put it through both an attenuator and the impedance transformer which multiplies the signal voltage back up. Rather than just straight from the mic to the amp with an XLR-jack cable. Is it to tweak it just so?

In any case, do you have some sound samples?

I guess if noise isn't an issue and you think it sounds good that way, there's no reason to get the full signal from your mic if youre only gonna cut it back down. I'd probably just not turn the amp up so loud but it's about how it sounds to you so it's all good on that test.
My question for DukeB is about the order of operations. Did you try putting the compressor between delay and amp? If so, how would you describe the difference/why did you choose to do it in the way you have?

@SuperBee Yes, it sounded different that way. I was surprised, because the LW delay was always first in my chain. But, putting it after the compressor actually made it less noisy and more sensitive.

One thing should try - now that I have the Flat Cat - is to try this chain with no attenuator. Because the Flat Cat has a nice volume knob on it, so maybe I don't need the attenuator at all.

This set up really made my solid state amp usable. This my first solid state after using tubes all these years.

Interesting. I'm running Mic > LW Octave > LW v1 Delay > Flat Cat > Tube Amp.

That sounds better to me than having the Flat Cat in front. Since it's a pretty subtle effect (you notice when it's not on), it seemed to make more impact at the end of the chain.

Of course, I could also be mental. Wouldn't be the first time.

No Fat Jesus! Your not mental although sometimes this stuff makes us feel that way...Every 6 months or so I go through "Pedal order placement madness" second guessing compression placement in the chain is usually at the heart of this insanity. I'm currently running wireless, harp break, compression, autowah , micropog , delay, comic maximizer…Mike Fugazzi makes a good case for running the Flat Cat last in a past post, but it hasn't worked for me yet.

On my full pedalboard, I have it in front of a Tech 21 Blonde...

So if you think of it as an amped set up with the Blonde being the amp it is where Tech 12 suggests you put it. I have my mods and time effects after (like Tech 21 suggests)

I just got an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum pedal amp. I think the Flat Cat is going to act as a nice preamp- the Flat Cat already adds a gentle tone.

I'm going minimalist: SM57 > Flat Cat > Lone Wolf V2 Delay > EH 44 Magnum > 16ohm 10" speaker cab

Next year I'll add a Lone Wolf Tone+

WHICH CHAIN OF EFFECT PEDALS MAKES LIFE EASY?

Robert Keeley's mnemonic device for the typical order of effects. It translates thus:

Which > wah
Chain > compressor
Of > overdrive
Effect > EQ
Pedals > pitch
Make > modulation
Life > level
Easy > echo

This obviously varies for people (me included) and instrument but is the basic guide and makes perfect sense to me. Keeley describes more of why on his site.-J

Not to divert from the OP, but how do you like the 44 Magnum? I have really enjoyed using mine when sitting in when I didn't want to lug vintage tube amps out to venues, and when I know that the band prefers I not play directly through the PA.

The 44 Magnum has a smooth distortion of its own.

I am interested in your thoughts on the Flat Cat with this amp.

@dougharps It's in the mail, but I'll follow up. I'm excited to try with the Flat Cat. I also looked at a lot preamp pedals online to go with the 44, but not really seeing anything I like. So, I'm going to try it first with just the Flat Cat.

Always good to try things out before spending more.

I have occasionally used my LR Baggs Para DI using its 1/4" out to the 44 Magnum to shape my tone. The Para has an effects loop, too, so I have used delay there on occasion! Sometimes I use the Baggs XLR to the PA without an amp, just for the EQ control. It doesn't dirty up like Mike's Blond, or his SansAmp Para Driver. If I didn't have the Baggs already, I would strongly consider the SansAmp Para Driver.

The Baggs Para was designed for High Z lower power guitar inputs, so I have only used it with my High Z 585 to avoid the clipping I got when I tried it with a bullet mic.

But usually I have just used the 585 mic straight to the 44 Magnum to an 8 ohm Lil' Buddy with no effects.

Please keep us informed on how it works out for you!

@dougharps That's interesting that you're using the Lil' Buddy - I didn't know about that speaker. But I'm putting together a speaker box to go with the EH 44 Magnum. It will use the Eminence 10516 which I got because it's rated for 75 watts, and the 44 is - well, it's 44 watts. I got the speaker for $50 but I could have gone with the Lil' Buddy. You like the sound of the Eminence? It will be my first one.

The pine speaker box is from Fresno, CA, the speaker will be from KY, and the amp from NYC.

I just put a 10516 (used) in my VHT special 6. Apart from some noise on the 2draw, I like the speaker very much. More character than the stock one, and especially the low end is nice and tight. When you hold a stick mic, the low notes tend to be much louder than the higher ones. This evens it out a bit. Nice and light too!

That's good to hear, because I am all about 10" speakers and tight bottoms that I can punch and overdrive. I don't think I've ever been able to really overdrive a 12" speaker. And I got the Flat Cat to give me the best possible sound on the low notes. Can't wait to break out the G.

I had read that the Lil' Buddy was a darker sounding speaker so I tried one with the 44 Magnum and liked it a lot. I like that best with the old Shure 585AV mic, which does not feed back easily and has good lows, better than my bullets. I tried that Lil' Buddy with a '61 Gibson Explorer that had always seemed too bright with a Weber, and it worked fine there, too, so I bought another.

Rick Davis was where I first heard about the Lil' Buddy and Cannabis Rex. It depends on what sound you are going for. I like a darker tone, not so shrill.

I have used the 44 Magnum with a 12" Cannabis Rex, and unless I use an old analog delay or an EQ pedal to cut some highs, it sometimes seems too bright. I almost always leave the 44 Magnum switch on normal EQ, though I have used the bright setting when playing chromatic through the Lil' Buddy.

@FreeWilly
Do you think it is cone cry? So far I have only had that problem with 12" speakers on 2 draw, especially on an A harp.

Cone cry: that thought occurred to me also. I have one speaker so bad in that way I can't use it. I note the manufacturer stopped making that model...
