What is the longest running blues jam you know of?

The Sunday blues jam at Ziggies has been going every week for 40 years, and I'm wondering if that is among the longest.

I looked around on the 'net and found a few: the Sunday jam at Johnny D’s in Boston (25 years) and the Mansion Hill Tavern in Cincinnati (18 years). Also, Ted Halls Jam in Austin (20 years), Black Eyed Sally’s in Hartford CT (15 years), The Bayou in Rogers AR (13 years), and a few others.

It seems like there would be an old jam in Chicago that has been going for a long time. The Harlem Avenue Lounge? Rosa's?

The Weds jam at the Slippery Noodle (Indianas' oldest bar) has been going on for some time, I'm guess more than 40 years.

Big Ed Sullivans Sunday Jam has been going on for around 34 years-he took over the Sunday Jam at Dan Lynch after Bill Dicey hosted it.

Wow, that is amazing. Dude is dedicated to the blues. Have you been to that jam? What is it like? I've seen some videos from it, but I'd like to hear from you.

Big Ed's was one of the first jams I attended-
I was scared to death-I remember the Holmes Brothers being there-I got up with Popa Chubby-it was wild to say the least. Some very heavy musicians there-you need to have your stuff together. I was lucky-I could barely be heard over Popa-lol. This was when Big Ed was hosting the jam at Mannys Car Wash.

Manny's was my favorite bar in NYC during its heyday. As you can see, there was something everynight of the week. And it was my "local" as it was in my neighborhood, a very small drinking joint/club by any standard. The upper east side was not your typical destination for music in NYC at that time. The Papaya KIng was 86th st drew more of a crowd.

Dan Lynch's was downtown near most the other venues like Tramps, Bottom Line, Lone Star etc. Mikell's was my other favorite on the upper west side, 99th st. Richard Tee and Cornell Dupree were the dynamic duo there and they played with a galaxy of stars. Terra Blues and BB KIng's seem to be the big place for blues today.

Big Ed Sullivan's jam is not on Sunday.... It is on Mondays at The Red Lion on Bleeker Street. How long has he been doing that jam?

His online bio says he was "one of the regular players" at the jam at Manny's Car Wash, not the host.

Here is Big Ed's Facebook page

"tmfwrote "Big Ed Sullivan's Sunday Jam in NYC-35 years."

Sorry-Big Ed Sullivans Blues Jam-35 years in NYC-I knew it was Mondays, because I will be attending the jam in April.

"Rockabilly Madman (and Dixie Frog recording artist) Big Ed Sullivan is the New York area’s preeminent jam leader. He previously ran the legendary blues jam at the long-gone Dan Lynch bar. He followed this with a popular jam session at the also now-defunct Manny’s Car Wash — as well as running several shorter-lived sessions at other NY City clubs."

From the Scotland Yard website-don't know how long he has been hostin at the Red Lion-

I attended a few of the Mannys Jams led by Ed-I am sure of that.

Slightly off-topic here, but has anyone noticed the volumes of regional, national, and international-level blues talent that passed through Manny's Car Wash in just a single month?

Carey Bell
William Clarke
Brody Buster
Mason Casey
Billy Branch
Johnny Copeland
Susan Tedeschi
Little Mike
Jimmy Thackery
Matt Guitar Murphy
Little Buster

...and others. Wow, did I not take enough advantage of Manny's when I lived only an hour and twenty minutes away. What a dumbass I was.

Blues jam's tend to collapse and flame out over time. They sometimes don't make economic sense, sometimes they are mismanaged or poorly promoted. Sometimes the host and format are unfriendly to new players, who are the lifeblood of any jam. They may be too loud or clique-ish or the drink prices may to jacked up to absurd levels or about a million other things that can kill a jam. It takes work and luck to make a jam last just a few years.

The blues jam at Ziggies in Denver has been going on every Sunday at 7pm on the same stage in the same bar for 40 years. It has always been "Ziggies" and it has always been in the same place. The ownership of the bar has changed a couple times, and the hosts have certainly changed. But the jam has rolled on.

I am not claiming it is the "best" jam but it's a good 'un and I think it is the longest running in the country right now. I'm happy to be part of it. I think blues jams are important in keeping the blues alive.

LOL, they claim to have the longest running "Open Blues Jam" in America at 30 years. I think I will write them a polite note....

SENT via facebook: (hat tip to Tom)

"Hi, Rick Davis here from Denver Colorado. I am the president of the Mile High Blues Society and the host of a blues jam we sponsor at Ziggies in Denver. Just so you know, the Sunday open blues jam at Ziggies has been running every Sunday on the same stage for 40 years.

Thanks!
