I've enjoyed playing session steels in Bb and F. Tongue blocking works great but I find that when puckering they get uncomfortable after a short time. More so than say a Marine Band or a Suzuki Olive.

I'm of thinking of getting an 1847 model. I like the way the session steels respond and sound and I'm hoping the 1847s are a bit more playable for me.

Do you have a preference of one over the other?

Do the 1847 models have combs with a thinner profile then the session steel? Any thing else I should consider before investing in an 1847 over another session steel?

I'll probably get a G or A as my next steel model.

I like full body covers over over the classical design, although I haven't played an 1847 specifically. I find the Session covers are really comfortable in the hand, and haven't really noticed a difference in playing.

Thanks 1847. I'll give that a try though I think the difference might just be in the thickness of the comb. I think it's thicker on the session models.

@nacoran I like the full body covers as well. Almost all models I've tried without full covers have sharp edges that are just uncomfortable.

I prefer 1847 coverplates for Sessions, while Session coverplates on 1847 is OK for me. I sometimes put Session covers at 1847 to just another look, feel and tone.

If you are seeking a thinner profile, the Solist Pro covers offer that. I actually prefer them and find over blow/draws are easier. The Solist Pro covers are also interchangeable with all Seydel diatonic 10 hole models. I purchase them in bulk - as well as the Session style and 1847 style - for customers who want that option.

It is noted that the Solist Pro covers are not optimal for harps below (Ab) because of reed strike.

Good topic.

The Session Steel is a very comfortable harp for me to play. I just received a Low D harp with the power Draw tuning that I really like. I also bought a couple white combs for my S. Steel from Greg and it makes a great looking harp.
