Hello blues friends,

I thought maybe you guys could help me out here... Hands down, my favorite blue guitar player is Stevie Ray Vaughan (who's with me?), but I am ashamed to admit that all I own is "The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble" 2 disc album. It's a great collection, but--if I'm going to call myself a true fan--I feel like I better be familiar with more of his stuff. I though maybe some of you guys who are deeply submersed in the blues world could tip me off to some of his deeper cuts and lesser known recordings that might help me broaden my SRV horizons.

Thanks!

I have every cd he's released. One of my favorites is Solo's, Sessions & Encores. Its a compulation with different blues artists. Another is Live in the Beginning.
I prefer his early stuff. He has some great live dvd's worth checking out.

The first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan's music (a TV show in the early 80s),it was that great music feeling I have only felt a few times. Like when I heard Muddy Waters on the radio or when I saw Jason Ricci on youtube for the first time. Recommended CDs: Texas flood, Couldn't stand the weather, In step, Soul to soul, Family style (with Jimmie Vaughan), Live at montreaux.

The Essential Collection and Double Trouble 2 cd set cover most of his well known stuff that's on Soul to Soul, In Step, Couldnt Stand the Weather, Etc:
Family style is a good one, really shows the completely different styles of the Vaughn Brothers.

Stevie ain't OT! He has turned a lot of people on to the blues. I LOVE trying to play some of his licks on harp.

Be sure and get the DVD's too! Live at Austin, Montruex, and playing with Albert King.

Stevie did two shows in Austin. One in 83 and the other in 89 that were taped for public television. For whatever copyright reason, the original TV airings have not been released. What you get on the DVDs is what landed on the cutting room floor. It's still great.

I would love to see releases on what was originally aired. I remember the version of Voo Doo Chile I saw in the original airing for the 89 show was superb!

Anyone?

Are you sure Harpaholic? The full concerts? The DVD I have has 3 or 4 songs from 83 and the rest from 89. I looked on Amazon etc. and the PBS site. No luck. Are you telling me you have this version of Stevie playing Voo Doo Chile in 89 dressed in black on DVD? My DVD has the 83 version where he is dressed in light blue.

This appears to be copied from a VCR of the original showing.

COOL BLUES MOMENT ALERT:

I work at a middle school and just today, after a full day of horrific state mandated testing, the students were all gathering in the gym where they were rewarding with a performance by a totally rockin' heavy blues band that the school hired for them. These guys were awesome! And played several SRV covers. The kids were especially floored by the guitar player's "Stevie style" behind-the-back playing. :)

Needless to say… I was standing off to the side of the gym, smiling from ear to ear!

Anyway, thanks so much for the recommendations. As a kid it was the Austin City Limits footage that forever got me hooked on the blues.

I'm particularly looking forward to checking out Family Style seeing as--since becoming interested in harmonica--I have become a little more familiar with Jimmie's playing thanks to Kim and the Thunderbirds

Thanks again!
