A great early jazz/ragtime/jug-band record from Bobby Leecan and company. Check out Robert Cooksey's cool 1st-position harp solo that starts at around 43 second.

I've always been a fan of old-time music, and I love the jug-band stuff. Lately, I've been playing a lot of first-position stuff on my G and A harps-- getting a full blues scale with blow-bends on the upper holes was a big breakthrough. I'm having fun trying to play old-time fiddle tunes on the harp this way.

Anyone else into this stuff?

Yeah, I dig the old stuff. Gwen Foster, Jazz Gillum and Rhythm Willie are my favorites from the 20's and 30s. I'll check out Cooksey too.

And they're modern, but you should check out the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Good fun jugband.

Yeah man, love this stuff!

I got really into doing jug band stuff after guys I was in a band with started playing "you may leave" after learning it from an american old timey fiddler called Roy Pilgrim, who in turn had learnt it from Blind Boy Paxton who if you haven't heard is brilliant and one of the most charismatic live performers about!

Its a Memphis Jug Band tune, and the original has a great ragtime run in it which I had to switch to first position to play and I've loved playing in first since!

Will Shade who fronted Memphis jug band I believe is credited as being an early teacher of Big Walter Horton, 'Memphis' Charlie Musselwhite and both Sonny Boy Williamsons....

Never heard Paxton before! I like his lyrical additions to the Memphis Jug Band version. He leaves in the mysterious "todalo shaker" line... I've often wondered about what that might be... :-)

I've seen the Chocolate drops a few times, Nisei. They're always fun to watch, switching instruments mid-song and whatnot.

How bout this Ashley and Foster tune? I've been trying to get that flutter (at 8 seconds, 10 seconds, etc.) Any insight on the technique there?

I'm not sure but I got close to this sound by rapidly bending and releasing blow bends.Filisko is great at this.
