Hi all. I'd like to share a song I wrote based on a book my wife wrote with her friend. It's based on real-life examples of Lord of the Flies type situations; the dark themes (murder, fighting, cannibalism, drunken despair, The Beast etc.) suit the blues well, in my opinion.

Nice one, BronzeWailer. I'm also writing songs now, and singing them, so I know the challenges, especially when singing and playing solo.
Your song sounds like a 12-bar blues structure where you are improvizing the fills and a chorus or two. As a point of discussion, I'd suggest that it needs more structure than just the 12BB form. When you are carrying the whole thing, I think the harp lines could benefit from a hook riff or two that get repeated and glue the whole song together more, perhaps related to the sung melody?
As a fledgling song-writer myself, it would be a good use of this forum to have a thread dedicated to discussing voice-and-harp arrangements. Thanks for taking the risk of sharing your song. I will follow suit, and I hope forum members can start sharing ideas on song-writing. ----------

Thanks for the input Mr So & So. Good ideas. My teacher also said each song had to have a signature riff so they don't sound too same-y. I will have to learn more theory so I can't expand beyond the 12 bar format. I have also played this song with one of my guitar guys on the street a few times and it works OK, but I like to have the flexibility of doing the whole thing solo as well. A song-writing thread is a great idea! I would be very interested to hear what you and others are creating. Thanks again!

Loved it! I think the harp part fit very nicely. The fill after the first vocal line was a very nice shadow. Maybe it could have been repeated as mr so&so suggested but I loved the rest of it too. A acoustic guitar, maybe a steel guitar or some other slide guitar would have fitted nicely and given it a bit more "glue". Yup, a duo piece! One man on harp and song and one on steel guitar and stomp box!

Thanks Pistolcat and Paul. Appreciate the feedback. I've been listening to Son House a lot. I'm not an anti-modernist but need to learn the basics first...
Cheers,

The first thing I learned with harp and voice arrangements was that when I play a riff and then sing it, I get almost no response, but if I sing a riff and then play it, everyone thinks I'm a musical genius. :)
I like the idea of a voice/harp arrangement thread. Maybe we should start another one so we don't hijack this one. Really nice song. Nicely done.

Thanks Bruce and Nate. Possible topics of discussion for the voice-harp thread. I am interested in how the solo harp guys keep the groove; of course you've got to do the move the body thing (as Adam and Rick Estrin have shown in their videos); I also am interested in how the little in-between bits (the "chuck chucks" and rhythm-y little puffs help keep the groove going. The goal is internalised metronome!
