I don't think I've mentioned this before. A few weeks ago I was looking online for some chromatic harmonica learning resources. Anyway one of the place I checked was the NHL website (National Harmonica League). I'm not a member as I've never seen the benefits of being in it. I'm sure some of the UK players here are though and can maybe enlighten me as to the benefits of joining it. Anyway I digress.

So there I am looking through the NHL website. When it turns out that the secretary of the NHL David Hambley lives in the same small Lancashire town as me. What a very small world we live in. I think I'll have to get in touch with him and pick his brains a little about the chromatic . maybe he'll know some other players/teachers in my area.

I'm a new harp player and the NHL has been really useful to me so far. They put me in touch with a local harp teacher in Bristol and I've had several lessons which have really helped me come on. My lessons have also led to other opportunities including uncovering a music scene in Bristol that I knew nothing about. So the NHL has been a good stepping stone for me.
The NHL hosts a harmonica festival at the Bristol Folkhouse in October which sounds good. The Folkhouse is a great venue. I'm going to that and would be interested in hooking up with any others on here who are also attending.
Finally, the NHL publishes a quarterly newsletter which is put together by Roger Trobridge. Roger writes most of the content I understand and seems happy to receive contributions from other harp players.
I've recently written an article that is being published in the next edition of the magazine available in August. The article is about my upcoming trip to the US and it's called 'Searching for the Ramblin' Man'. It includes references to the help I've received from members on this site in the planning of the trip.
So, yeah, the NHL has worked out for me so far and I'm glad I joined. But like all these things, it might not be for everyone.

Glad it's working out for you Johnny. It would seem there is a plethora of harp players in the Bristol area from what I read online. I'm not so sure there are that many in Lancashire though. I'm mainly interested at this point in finding some local chromatic players to learn some stuff from. I've sent David Hambley an email asking him about the local scene in that regards. Hopefully something will come of it.

Harp players - yeah. Colliery brass bands - nope, nothing compared to Lancashire I bet. I'm originally from one of your neighbouring counties and know Lancashire a wee bit. Anyway, sorry, for going off topic. Good luck finding some local Chromatic collaborators on NHL or otherwise and thanks for the heads up on the mic resto.

Hahaha! Oh yeah loads of Brass bands up here. I work with a guy who plays a few brass instruments and he plays in a few of those bands. He's played the Albert hall a few times and been on BBC radio loads. I must get out and see him perform one of these days. I'm an immigrant to the North myself. I originally come from Oxford. Hope you get those mics sorted and sounding great.

hey johnnycajon,
speaking as one Bristol harpee, I have a jam tonight at the Oxford in Totterdown at 9pm or alternatively at the Cornubia, Temple St, every Thursday is the Backdoor Man Blues Jam which is basically a social (and musical) get together for us people who live in this amazing musical city, all very welcome whatever the standard on any instrument (even brass bands!!)
Please make yourself known to me if you come along:)

Loz- Thanks. I saw Mat play years ago and he's a very good diatonic player. I didn't know he played chromatic too.
