A couple of years ago I bought a Seydel Blues Soloist (C)

I have normally played Lee Oskar but wanted to give another harp a try... at the time I was having trouble with the high notes...

The Blues Soloist came and was really easy to play but the 6 draw (or was it the 6 blow?) went bad after a week or so...

Ordered another and the same thing happened.

They have both been in the drawer ever since. Now I'm considering an attempted rescue.

I'm not sure if I need a new reed plate or individual reeds are available...

Can anyone advise me where to buy and possible price... or is it worth it? Is a new harp about the same price as a replacement reed/reed plate?

Thanks for any help.

You can buy new plates on the Seydel site, I believe. I wonder if the "Session Service Special" plates will fit a soloist - I don't know offhand. Basically, Seydel brass reeds are known to be somewhat frail. The service special costs about $25 and you get a set of stainless reedplates for a Seydel Blues Session harp.

You can replace the reeds, though. I have used Hohner brass reeds on various Seydel brass models.

Depending on where you live, you can send your harp to any number of harmonica service providers (like myself!) for inexpensive reed replacement. You probably will get back a harp with some extra mojo, too... MP (Mark Prados) should trademark that slogan!

Rockin Rons has reed plates. I was just looking at some today (I've got one of Dave Payne's combs lying around that needs a harp.)

The reed plates are $33.50, the harps are $44.95.

The reed replacement guys are about $10 I think, but you have to pay shipping and handling, so it's best if you send a bunch of broken harps at once.

Arzajac, did you get my email? I've talked to a manufacturer now, but I haven't heard anything back (except a request to send the video as a smaller file!)

Related, I've got a harp that I tried to fix, a MB that I tried to drill out (I wrecked a gorgeous Reynolds comb in the process- don't ever use a good comb for a jig!) It's still not sitting right on the other comb I have for it. I guess you can't just straight up drill MB nail holes bigger and expect them to fit on one of the Sp20 custom combs. What are your rates for fixing hole alignment issues? (I've got a couple MBs that need to be redrilled too.) Also, I've picked up a pre-MS Blues Harp I'd like to fix up, but I'm not sure what combs it will fit on (it plays pretty well, but the tines are brutal on the lips).

I can fix it, too for you. However, I generally go back with a polished stainless steel Seydel reed which will fit in the slot. It will last a lot longer.

Jim, id doesn't say 'Pro' on the box or on the harp so I'm guessing it is simply a 'Soloist'

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Are the reeds held to the reed plate by screws or rivets on this model Seydel?

Opus, the only manufacturer to ever use screws on reedplates was Harrison Harmonicas. They quickly ran out of money and crashed and burned. So your reeds are held on with rivets.

Jim,
Good call. He's got one of the old Solists which means it is the old style reeds I bet. They are really not worth fixing and Seydel doesn't make them anymore.

Okay... let's try it this way: are the top octave reeds narrower than the low octave reeds?

@Greg: you can repair those using Saxony reeds.

I have a B-rad. Shame Harrison failed, if only for the fact that they produced the first and the only diatonic ever w/ screw posts and nuts for easy reed replacement. (sigh)

That reminds me- I've finally got calipers. I'm going to start measuring oddball reeds to add to the public record. I've got Piedmonts around, but I'm not sure my calipers are accurate enough to measure reeds that thin!

Let's see, I've got a Silvertone, and a Puck, pre- and post MS Blues Harps, Pocket Pal, Bluesbands, American Ace, Piedmonts, GM, L.O. MB, Blessing Tremolos, Seydel Blues Favorite, a Hohner Chrometta, Session Steel, Huang Musettes, several varieties of Magnus harps, including a chromatic, but I can't open any of them up... and my prized possession, a Doug & Melissa Tremolo! (I usually don't swear, but what a piece of shit!)

Posted a day later than I intended... accident took out a telephone pole, the internet, cable, etc., right mid post.
