I have yet to make my decision on an amp, mainly because we play mosstly country music and I play the harp through the PA. Which sounds pretty damn good to me, and everyone else. I ONLY wanted some distortion when we play Southern Rock, but a tube preamp into the PA sounds plenty dirty to me and still has good tone. I keep hearing the same old statement of you only need a tube amp.
Isnt the PA solid state? And if it is, why does it sound so clear. I figure, why spend the $ on a tube amp? If its only for harp, you cant sing thru the tube amp. I am leaning towards some sort of cube/combo PA/amp that I can play acoustic guitar on and play harp and or sing. Any suggestions or comments as to why this will or wont work?

THis is not at all my area of expertise but I have some experience: There are PA:s and PA:s.
Through some you can sound from quite all right to really good, given tweaking (EQ adjustments) and decent microphone.
There are others that will only make you sound like an angry sewing-machine, no matter how much time and money you spend on tweaking and microphones. (Id´say that these PA:s are generally from the cheaper segment.)

Some sort of pre-amp option can -- but will not necessarily -- be a way to deal with this latter kind.

Others can probably chime in on the technics.

Check out the Lone Wolf pedals (harp attack & harp break). They will make your Southern rock stuff go...

There is nothing wrong with what you're doing for the music and tone you seem to be looking for. A modern PA is designed to be clear, and it is exceptionally so BECAUSE it is solid state. If all you want is a little distortion from your harp once in a while, a pedal like the Lone Wolf Harp Attack plugged into the PA is all you need. Why carry an amp?

Now, for ME - I play a lot of electric blues and I want a big huge fat sound. For that, you just can't beat a tube amp.

One thing that i will say, is that some people seem to like the Holmes Harp Commander's.

The new ones will let you use an amp as a monitor on stage (which i find very helpful).... but still let you plug straight into the PA system (giving you that sound projection you want). Plus an impedance matching transformer, an fx loop for pedals and even allowing compression/distortion controls on the unit. All this....plus more.

I suppose it really depends on your needs/wants... and your preference on setup.

As DoubleJ and Greg both stated.... Lone Wolf has some amazing products and from my personal humble opinion, I would also recommend them as an option as well.
