I know James Harman uses them and they have two different circuits for the blonde and the blackface. SRV used the blackface with 1*15 one I think? That's pretty much all I know. It doesn't have the sound that I like the most for harp but it has a pretty unique sound that grow on me quickly. For a while now that I couldn't get James Harman's sound out of my head. It cuts & seems to give you more room for more (musical)subtleties compare to another famous fender amps in that 40w range. Which one that James always use, 6g16 or ab763? What's the speaker configuration? and for the blackface one wasn't ab763 ciruit used for the twin & the super as well? What's the differences between these model? Thanks in advance.

The AB763 was one of Stevies favorite amps. It utilized a 15" speaker. Fender never made a blonde Vibroverb. The Brown 6G16 utilized 2x10" speakers, but Jimmy modded his Vibroverbs, turning them into Blonde combos with a 15" speaker-last I know ,those amps were stolen, and still MIA- The Blackface Pro, Concert, Bandmaster, Deluxe,Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, Showman,Twin Reverb, Tremolux,Vibrolux and Vibroverb {all blackface} shared the AB763 chassis. Most people call him James-but his friends call him Jimmy-

@tmf714, brown - my bad. Is it the 6g16 or ab763 that James modded? I've read the info in his website as well but still not clear about which one he was using.
"The Blackface Pro, Concert, Bandmaster, Deluxe,Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, Showman,Twin Reverb, Tremolux,Vibrolux and Vibroverb {all blackface} shared the AB763 chassis." excuse my ignorance, I wasn't into the blackface amps before but did you mean they're all shared the same circuit? Does that mean the differences between them were mainly speaker configurations, tremolo and reverb?

James mods his amps using the 6G16 circuit.
All those blackface amps I mentioned share the AB763 circuit, including the differences you metioned.

Hey, liquidfire, I've done the forum search and went to your channel already. Great sound, I'm kinda interested in this amp because it sounds pretty unique to me. You from Singapore right? I'm from Bangkok. I almost get to play with my friends in Mosaic festival actually but couldn't go in the end because I was too busy. Anyway, nice too have somebody from the nearby country in this forum. I know Zhin's from Singapore too but haven't seen him here for a long time.

Hey Puri,
Yeah, I'm from Singapore. Good to know you are in Bangkok. Too bad you can't make it for Mosaic. Maybe next time.
About the amp, I think both the black Vibroverb custom (it was not a straight reissue) and the brown Vibroverb reissue have been discontinued for a while. Haven't played through the black one. And we can just about forget about the originals cos they are both very rare and expensive.

Marsh amps seem to be making a bit of a name for themselves with their excellent value for money ($1500?) reproduction of the 6G16, 2x10, brown Vibroverb. ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness

Hi Mark, it was you that got me interested in this amp - in the mail that you told me it's what James Harman always use. Yes, I'm getting quite ambitious this time, thinking about building one maybe at the end of the year I think. I'm kinda trying to work out the budget at the moment. Should I go with the brown or the blackface?

I used a RI '63 Vibroverb for two decades, the brown 2x10 version, running the harp through the normal channel and the guitar through the reverb channel. I used it stock for a long time but then did a tube and speaker swap, NOS Telefunken 12AY7 for the harp, blackplate RCA 6l6s for power. Speakers were Weber 10a125s. The Webers made the most significant improvement.
Here is a recording with the stock amp, Shure 520 CM, no effects.
When I went back after the first tour of Europe I met a guy who actually went out and bought the same amp because he heard me use one. Quite an amazing experience and a huge compliment. ---------- LSC

Hi Puri, if it's the James Harman recordings that are driving your interest, then you want the brown face circuit (6G16) & a 15" speaker. The blackface Vibroverb was essentially the common BF circuit with different transformers & speaker, but the brown 6G16 was a unique circuit (despite some common features with other brown amps of the period). ---------- www.myspace.com/markburness
