Here is a a snippet of Ronnie Shellist at the MHBS Blues Harp Workshop yesterday, discussing how he likes to mix amp tone with the vocal PA mic.

Ronnie is playing through a '57 Supro he found at a thrift shop for $79. The guitarist on stage with him is Matt Hendricks, a very fine blues player and singer who recently moved from Chicago to Denver.

that was really cool!
lester butler use to do that all the time' he did that cause his band, was so loud!
it gave him an open and airy tone with the jt 30 and the vocal mic. that is what i liked about his playing, it was not totally overdriven. his big record was obviously live.it never occurred to me that in the studio, the same technique could be used to great effect! learn something new everyday.
is this a great website or what?
it's like hanging around a campfire.

That's an old trick used to get "air" into recordings. It does give a very cool sound. The same trick in reverse is often used live, especially when singing to dirty up the vocals a little. Another neat trick is burying the mic into your neck to play bass lines or muffled fills on quiet passages. So that the mic picks up the acoustic harp sound through your throat. Steve Guyger uses that one a lot.
