I went to a pawn shop (There are no music stores in the sticks where I live) and just played on a few amps as suggested here, to see what I thought about the sound of the different amps. Being a beginner I couldn't really tell much of a difference between them. There were no tube amps to play. I have seen the question,"Which beginner amp should I buy?" and since there are so many choices and opinions, maybe the question should be...What should I avoid when buying my first amp? I played on a CRATE GX-10 I thought sounded decent. They had it priced at $50. I didn't question or act interested so I could come back and haggle, but I wanted to get some thoughts from the more experienced players here before I go and buy something that I might regret later. I have seen other CRATE Amps mentioned in other threads but not the GX-10. SOOO.... What do you fellas think?

If it's priced at $50 at a pawn shop, you can rest assured that it will sell for less. How bad can it be? At the very least you will be able to practice playing amplified and have a basis for comparison when you play through other amps down the road. You might be able to find something cheaper (but not much) on eBay, but you have the advantage of playing through this one before you buy. Pull the trigger! Do it!! DOOOOO IT!! Unless you don't want to.

Even if you don't get that vintage honk out of it, you can still work on your mic and cupping techniques. And iffins you really start to itch for that crunchy tube sound, get an effects/modeler pedal. ---------- Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy. -Dan Castellaneta
