Try looking at paints and varnish for children's toys. As they have to be food safe. If you wanted to spend a little cash, you can also buy powder coated covers in various colours from www.bluemoonharmonicas.com.

Well , you only find it for wood toys and it's quite expensive .The colors are not very beautiful...
I think BLUEMOONHARMONICAS is the way to go .
Hey , TOM , you should have a store in FRANCE ! lol .

If the colors are purely intended to decipher between different keys, why not just paint the side of the comb instead of the entire coverplate? Or place a color coded stickers instead?

This is trickier than you might think. I've been in the coatings industry since 1985, so I know a little about this. In fact, I'm looking at getting my harp covers painted also.
The problem is that not a lot of coatings have good adhesion to chrome plated stainless steel.

Your best bet is powder coatings. If you want a specific color, you might have to pay $$$, but if you ask them to spray the cover when they are doing a different part, then that might take a lot of the expense out. (Cleaning the gun and spray booth is time consuming, so its better to piggyback off of someone else's job.)

I'm going to be using a 2 component urethane from Sherwin Williams called Polane. Its not available to general consumers.

@jiceblues I have a lot of customers in France. Shipping is very inexpensive. French harp players love the powder coated covers. Philosofy is exactly right with regards to piggybacking. If you can find a local powder coating shop who will let you throw your covers in with a batch they are doing for another customer they can give you a better price than doing a separate batch for you alone. That's how I got started but now I get so many plates done myself that I can justify the expense of a separate "batch fee". I typically get 100+ sets of covers done in each batch. I will say that I have been very fortunate to have found vendors who have been intrigued by my projects to the degree that they have been willing to accommodate me. There is no way I could have advanced my cause had it not been for some very generous and helpful people.

@jiceblues - email me privately and let's see if we can work something out.

Lastly, I was planning to announce a blow-out sale on powder coated Special 20 covers. I have a ton of brand new covers. I'll put this up on the For Sale thread later but I have them available for only $$14.95 per set - while supplies last.

By the way, I'm going to share my color coding strategy:
First, don't you hate it when you grab your harp, and start playing it upside down? That's why I'm going to have the bottom plates of my major keys colored white, and the sharps and flats' bottom covers will be black (just like the piano keys.) The only exception will be high G and low F: those will have gray bottom covers.

That solves the upside down harp, but what about grabbing the right key? Here's my color scheme:

F=Fruit= Orange
C= Cobalt Blue
G= Grape = Purple
D= Dainty = Pink
A= Candy Apple Red
E= Emerald = Green
B= Banana = Yellow

When I get mine done, I will post pics. Since I have access to lots of neat stuff, the colors will have effect pigments in them: sparkles, color shifting, etc.

For not grabbing the harp upside-down(it happened to me very often while gigging) i put a key sticker on the right end of the comb .
My color scheme would be :
A -green
D-yellow
C-orange
F-blue
Bb-moonstone
Don't ask me why...

@TOM: i sent you an e-mail .
These are the main keys i use .

What exactly is a powder coating? Is it like what's on a Suzuki Hammond?

Tom's covers are beautiful. I also have some of his stickers. I've put together a beautiful sunrise harp with the sunrise sticker and an orange comb. I think it's my best looking harp! I have a purple cover from Tom that I put on a purple comb from Chris Reynolds that looks snazzy too.

I never now have the problem of picking up a harp upside down.
I replace the tiny bolts and or those thingies that look the same at either end(well on a darkish stage anyway)with longer bolts and proper nuts so the shank of the bolt sticks out about a quarter inch on the underside.
Basically even in a coalmine i could find the right way up by feel alone.
Not terribly pretty i suppose but hey these are working harps so i'm not too worried about the look of them.

@jiceblues - I did not see an email from you. Perhaps you can try again. The "stickers", which I call Harmonica Skinz are made from the same 3M vinyl that is used to wrap cars and trucks. You can find them on my website here: http://www.bluemoonharmonicas.com/harps/misc
