Today, I stopped into Guitar Center to pick up a last minute item. Surprisingly, the place was not packed! As I was coming through the door, I saw a Fender Pawn Shop Special Excelsior sitting out on display. I asked at the counter if they had a mic I could use to try it out. In typical great GC fashion, they guy asked what mic, I said an SM58 would do. He got the mic, cable and impedance matching transformer hooked me up and away we go.
I was plugged into the mic channel, tone switch set to dark, tremolo off. I gotta tell you, this amp sounded great to my ear. Nice tone, nice break up, all at around $275. I was standing right in front of it, maybe 2 or 3 feet away. At around 11 o'clock on the volume knob, it would feed back if I dropped the mic down in front of it. As long as I was playing, it was fine. Above 12:00, it was feeding back a bit even playing but I'm guessing dropping the preamp tube to a 12AT7 or lower would take care of that.
If I were in the market for an amp, I'd definitely put the Excelsior on my short list.
While I was playing, I guy and his son came up and told me that I sounded great. That was a nice Christmas gift for me.
Happy Holidays everyone!

KingBiscuit, thanks for the review. I've been looking for something to fill the gap between my Bassman and little Roland Cube Street. At 33 pounds, it's a tad heavier than I had hoped, but should still be easier to carry up a flight of stairs than the Bassman.
