It is what it is. I'm a white guy( I think) but grew up in a black part of town, was married to a black woman and play music with folks of all colors. Most of my black family ,friends and fellow musicians have had little interest in " real blues"
Maybe funk blues, jazz blues, or chitlin circuit blues( bobby rush, clarence carter , marvin sease etc). but certainly not the obsession with Muddy, Wolf, Charly Patton etc. that we often have.
Bottom line is we ain't stealing anything anymore than an American martial arts student is stealing an ancient asian art.
If you dig the blues just respect it, enjoy it and if you have enuff talent add to it.
It is strange that most people only know Sugar Blue from some blokes called the Rolling Stones
The race thing is pretty well played out-just play the music from the heart

Has Sugar Blue ever approached any of the big blues promoters with this problem? I find it hard to believe that at least some of them would be sympathetic to the problem if they were made aware of it.

I take issue with that, sonvolt13. I thought Popper's statements about music in general, including his statements about blues, were spot on. If you think he was wrong, say why he's wrong. Your ad hominem comparison to Vanilla Ice is not an argument at all.

I agree. I enjoyed the Popper clip. I'm not a huge Popper fan (I think I love his singing more than his harp playing after a few songs), but he is certainly a talented, articulate and intelligent dude and what he said in the video was about as far from anything that anyone could disagree with who takes the art of creating music seriously. Otherwise, you are the Vanilla Ice-like clown. Think for yourself is all he is saying. Wow, how conroversial! And so...so, anti-Little Walter, so anti-blues. Popper is good at what he does. Move on.

Popper is a trip! Last time he was on Howard Stern's show, he scared the daylight's out of Howard when he discovered John was carrying something like 15 knives .....of all sorts including a 10" bowie!

@ Kudz,.
Thank You ,.Elvis never said, "The only thing negroes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes."
I've been saying this for 45 yrs !
I think this Video says a lot about what black people thought of Elvis,.an instead of worrying about who's House it is we should be worrying about are we family !

I'd pick popper's prattle apart, but I can't put myself through it again. I sat through about 10 minutes and my overwhelming thought was a anguished question about whether it was ever going to end. Of course, it did end. When I reached my limit and touched the "done" button.
I found his personal story interesting, but his philosophical talk rather banal. Maybe he was just saying think for yourself. I didn't pick that up. But if so, fair enough. I thought he was explaining why he plays the way he does is that he wasn't interested in the way blues harp had been played By anyone else. And it seemed like he felt he needed to justify that with some guff about being a white kid from New York. As distinct from a black kid from Chicago. But he was blasé and inaccurate in what he said at that point I just couldn't take him seriously at all. It was like he actually didnt even know what he was talking about, but he was dismissing it all anyway. I get the point though was that he didn't care about that sh1t, so why would he even bother to get the facts. Fair enough, he's a pragmatist, spends his time playing harmonica rather than reading history. It's probably a completely valid approach. I just found that 3 minute video format really annoying with the introduction about being damn good and such. And I don't enjoy his music so I'm predisposed to be critical.
