I'm pretty sure that the element is crystal. It has a weird metal shell that would have to be cut to fit in a bullt type shell.I am curious if Mr Heumann has ever installed an element like I am talking about.I have heard some of these crystals sound pretty good, but I am not handy enough to undertake that project.

510C is indeed controlled magnetic and will have a good CM in it.

There ARE mics using the same housing from Shure that have crystal elements - Blueharper I know what you're talking about. The elements are very hard to use because they are built with a large flanged section that is difficult to remove cleanly, but won't fit inside a shell if you don't - and the diaphragm has no protective cover. They are extremely easy to damage before you ever get to a full installation. I avoid them.

anytime you see that type of housing, even if it says Rex or Hercules or whatever it WILL have a CR or a CM. The crystal version is very rare. like greg says, i wouldn't want to fight getting a crystal out. i've tried and it only led to sorrow.:) the crystals foil cone is unprotected and will wrinkle or get pierced at the least false move.
on the back of the housing it often will indicate what type of element is in the mic. it will clearly state controlled magnetic or controlled reluctance.

Color of housing will vary from blue to grey to the green shown in pic. some will be table top for tape recorders and others will have short stand mount like this one-for CB use. buy it:)!
