These are nice!!! I have one and It's now my favorite chormatic (besides my highly customized Super 64X) IMO, For the money, there is no better instrument. They're very airtight and have great response. The full length covers are easy to cup and make for a BIG sound, especially amplified. The mouthpiece is very comfortable and has little to no gap b/t it and the covers.

The coolest part about these harps is that all of the parts are interchangable with the 270 DeLuxe, and all but the reedplates are interchangable with the standard 270.

One assumes the reeds from a 270 are compatible? I just put a 260 reed into a CX . . .
BTW, Ron has the SCX-48 in G for $150, I bet that is just as good a value as the Discovery--and it give you that G3 on the bottom that I like . . . I retune the G to Orchestra in C.

UK and Australia--I don't think they have hit the states yet.
Nothing on eBay--that means Ron's not got them.
Adam, where did you get yours?

Would it be a wiser choice to invest the extra money for the Horner 64 chromonica instead of a discovery 48?

I have never played chromatic, but I am interested in pursuing it as diligently as the diatonic.

Any thoughts?
Cheers,

Carl

I like the low end that's available on a 64. That low octave has a very deep, full horn -like tone(if you get a baritone 12 hole, you can have that low end available). The 12 hole is definitely easier to hold while cupping a mic, though, and is overall, a little lighter and more portable.

It looks like Discovery is a pretty good instrument. Although I already have a Seydel 12 hole(the Deluxe) it's pretty much ready for a rebuild, or retirement, so I may get a Discovery to have in addition to my two gigging 16 hole models. The newer Hohner models of diatonic have been very good quality, so perhaps this chromatic will also be good.

I find the chromatic to be a great harp to learn, although different from diatonic. I use it a lot.

I played one at SPAH and really liked it. I wanted to get one, but I only play third position blues stuff and have no need at all, lol.

It will be on my Christmas list, though.

This isn't where I got mine, but Elderly Instruments appears to have a few in stock.

i've played 270s and 64s for many years. the 64 has a very full bodied sound. the 270s sound good but don't have quite the timbre of a 64.
i'm really wondering if the Discovery 48 has that full sound in the middle register like the 64.
i'm not talking about the extra octave on the 64s low end but the fullness of all the octaves.

i gig w/ 64s. they are bulky but i don't notice harp dimensions once i start playing.
the 270 is like a toy in comparison and the diatonics feel like i'm gonna lose them when i switch back. heh, heh.
i'm no toots thielmanns or even paul delay but i can l and find my way around a chro after a fashion.
it's a beast if you let it get to you.:-)

One of the differences between the 64's and 270's and their tonal diferences is that the 64 uses long slot reeds and the 270's uses short slot reeds. However, the 270 Deluxes, like the Toots Hard Bopper uses long slot reeds.

The Mellow Tone is the exact opposite. BTW, both have windsavers all the way up the harp.

thanks again Bob! now you've got me wondering if i should just look for Hard Boppers on EBay.

those used to be the best medium sized chromatic that Hohner made. i even liked them better than the CBH equivalent. slot length would explain a fuller tone.
