Anyone know what this means in relation to a harp?

C7 brings two things to mind--the dominant chord in the key of F (C E G Bb) that is produced on the harp as the draw chord (mostly on the bottom--that chord gets weird on top), and the note waaaaay up the scale (middle C is C4, so that would be the top note of the C harmonica).

Do you have a context? It might mean C7 the note. A C harmonica usually starts on C4, so the 4-hole blow is C5, the 7-hole blow is C6 and the 10-blow is C7.

Gnarly is right.

So the answer depends on what contect "C7" is used.

So how was it used? For example, was it a chord chart that said the chords to the tune areare C7,F7, and G7?

Odds are it refers to the chord, not the note.

C7 could be the I chord of a blues in C, the IV chord of a blues in G or the V chord of a blues in F.

Nah...it's the new C7 Corvette to be unveiled Jan 13, 2013. Every harp player should have one!

The context is JJ Milteau's cd 'Harmonicas' in which he says which harp he uses and on track 2 it is a C7 Golden Melody

Could be Bebop tuning, which is a variant of solo tuning sometimes used on chromatics.

Gnarly: You play bebop tuning, right? Have you ever heard of anyone using it on diatonics?

"C7" all alone like that? Thinking mixolydian mode will get you moving right on down track.

@timeistight I play bebop chromatic, and I am well known for experimenting with tunings on diatonic (ask anybody).
I imagine the blow chord is C7, and yes, that is the way Bebop tuning lays on the chrom.
But diatonics are different--let's assume the blow chord is C7, that means (I am guessing all the way here) blow 7 is Bb, and 8, 9, and 10 are C E G.
So draw 7 is still B? And draw 8, 9, and 10 are D, F, and A, unchanged.
No reversal of breath direction--I always like that--
So no overdraws, but some really high overblows.

I just checked the liner notes of JJ Milteau's "Harmonicas" double CD set... I assume you are referring to the song "Freddie" on CD 2.

The liner note says "Except when noted, J.J. Milteau plays 10 holes diatonic Hohner MS harmonicas with wood or metal comb and opened covers. << 7 >> means tuning down 3 and 7 drawn a half step to get a minor chord drawn in 2nd position."

@harmonicanick Yes, great cd's ! Its not always easy getting CD's from artists outside the USA... and I always prefer the CD's instead of downloads for the additional information (hopefully!) in the liner notes.

JJ Milteau is one of my favorite harp players !

Todd Parrott often tunes the 7 draw down a semi-tone (1/2 step).

I was browsing through Steve Baker's "The Harp Handbook", and noticed the "Dorian (or Mixolydian)Tuning"... that is the "C7" tuning that JJ Milteau is using (3 draw and 7 draw tuned down a 1/2 step).

I've never tried using it, but may have to try it !

@Gnarly No... Alan Wilson retuned the 6 draw UP a 1/2 step... see Pat Missin's website at:

http://www.patmissin.com/ffaq/q19.html

Hakan Ehn has a tutorial on playing "On the Road Again", using the retuning that he uses, by lowering the 3 draw a 1/2 step, and raising the 6 draw a 1/2 step...

So one would blow bend to get the B natural on holes 3 and 7?
