The more I play stick mics the more I like 'em. I just seem to gravitate to them over bullet mic. I have an Ultimate 57 and a stock SM58. I like the qualities of each. I searched the forum archives and read up on the RE10 & 635a.

My rig consists of a LW harp attack> MXR carbon copy> BBE sonic stomp> VHT Special 6. I'm hoping that the 635a has a different enough voice than both of my Shures to warrant a purchase. I see that Billy Branch has been using one for years. i like his sound...

Who out there uses one? What is your sonic take on this mic. Pro & Cons...

Thanks

I own a couple of them. I've used them with a Peavey Bandit and a Pro Junior. They don't have the bottom of the RE10, but i don't think i need huge booming bottom. I've used them through the PA, too.

I also use them for micing a small amp.

They are damn near indestructible. They are small and easy to cup.

They aren't for everyone.

Cole - Used, you can find them inexpensively on ebay. I bought four of them for about $75 a few years ago. They all sounding similarly. They call them "The Hammer" for a reason, you can abuse them. They seem to hold their value. If you don't like them, you aren't out much.

I don't know if Billy Branch uses them on recordings, but I know that he has been using them pretty consistently since the early 1990's. I asked him why, he said that they match up really well with his Peavey Special 130 and the mic allows him to use hand effects that he couldn't easily do with a bullet mic. His advice was to make sure that you use an impedance transformer.

If your looking for that different voice try the Electro Voice 664 or Electro Voice 641,.
I think the 635a will sound close to your Ultimate 57 and stock SM58. .

Billy Branch has been using an EV 635A for many years, in recordings and live performance. I recently (earlier this year) gave him an EV RE-10, and that is the mic he played through at Hill Country and for a while after that, but then he went back to the 635A. I thought the RE-10 gave him a better tone, in my humble opinion. It was a richer tone that was evident the first time he used it. There were some of Billy's performance tunes that sounded crisper with the 635A, and I think that's why he went back to it. I haven't seen him since Artis's Lounge closed in August, so maybe he switched back, I don't know. It's a Low -Z microphone which requires an impedance matching transformer. Billy told me that very occasionally in the studio he might use a bullet mic, but that is rare.

The 635A has a bright and crisp sound, but no dirt whatsoever. Sometimes I use it when I want to punch through over especially loud guitars, either that or the EV 638 bullet mic.

I use only Electrovoice mics. I have a 635A, and I like it, but my go-to mic is either the RE-10 or a 631B, both wired Low-Z. They have more bottom end and a deeper tone than the 635A. I like those three stick mics because they are ergonomically ideal for cupping, they are lightweight and thin, and they have that great Electrovoice clarity. I also have a 664 and a 638 (which is a 641 without an on-off switch). The bottom on the 664 is especially excellent, but is a heavy cupping mic, and not practical except when playing acoustically, where it is awesome.

I also just bought an EV 623 which I have yet to test.
