The Mungo Jerry thread got me thinking it would be fun to compare notes on melodies you play for blues solos - I play a lot of improvised blues, but I like to throw in stuff that isn't necessarily blues, is recognizable, and happens to fit nicely over a standard I-IV-V. They are a refreshing change, and its fun to see some of the audience recognize them.
Here are the ones I can think of right now...
In the Summer Time (Mungo Jerry) Strange Brew (Cream) Bali Hai (from South Pacific) Norwegian Wood (Beatles - only over the 1st 8 bars) Don't Get Around Much Any more (Tony Bennet et al - yes, Big Walter did it too) Azulito (Mario Bauza - Mambo) I've got you under my skin (Sinatra)
Man, I sort of feel like I'm giving away my trade secrets - but I hope you will too - we don't perform to the same audiences, do we? So...come on,.... out with it!

the jazz people have been improv. on different song melodys and creating heavy personal songs out of a basic reconizable melody line also chords.look what they did with "rhythm changes" it has become a standard for improv. jam... john coltrane turned "my favorite things" into a long composition...and there wouldn`t be JAZZ without BLUES.......james cotton "jingle bells" in the creeper.......

'Smile' - by Charlie Chaplin, from the film 'Modern Times'. A quote from this melody often seems to creep into a solo every gig, whatever the progression...

Remember also that Eric Clapton plays the first bars of "Blue Moon" at the start of his solo on Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love". It was a perfect launching point for one of the great iconic guitar solos. ---------- Ted Burke http://youtube.com/watch?v=-VPUDjK-ibQ&feature=relmfu ted-burke.com

I love how the jazz players work those quotes into their solos. I'm not sure, but I think it's "Take The A Train". I try to work that in when the song permits.

"Twisted" per Joni Mitchell ("You see, little children are supposed to sleep tight..."), and "I Feel Free" per Clapton ("Feel, when I dance with you. We move like the sea..."). Sometimes "Mary had a Little Lamb." ----------

This isn't blues...but when I've attempted soloing on Comfortably Numb, I've thrown the verse licks of Rogers & Hammerstein's My Favorite Things in there. Works really well. ----------

I saw a great fiddler last night who threw in the Simpsons theme song riff in the middle of his encore solo.
