Hi! I had some requests about a tutorial for how to use the Ampkit and ampkit link to make record yourself. So I thought I'd share that. (Without any annoying videos of me playing my constipated blues...)
1. First of you need an microphone. Any will probably do but I got myself a Shure sm57 because of it's reputation of being a good harp mic and the very easy second hand market.
2. Iphone. But everyone have got that, right? An Ipad will do and maybe Ipod, too. Hell an android device might do but I'm not sure of that...
3. Ampkit Link or I've been hearing good things about the apogee jam. Both devices that allows you to connect guitars to iphone. of course, we want to connect our microphone to the ampkit link and Iphone so we need a:
4. ...Cable. From whatever connection on your microphone to 1/4" Jack.
5. Headphones. Without built in mic!
5. Connect it all... It's physically impossible to connect it wrong.
6. Get Ampkit from the appstore. It's free but you'll only get a minimum of (digital) gear so you'll probably want to spend some on getting some fun effects. I believe that most of the stuff is about 3$ but thera are also packages with discount. Warning! It's easy to get carried away here.
7. Setup as you like it! Here is a setup i call Tweedy harp crunch that I used on my Brown Shoes Blues video. Amphead: Vintage Brit. Dialed in like This
Cabinet and mic: 2x12 Vintage Brit and workhorse 57. On-axis. Pedals: Noise gate and a D-delay. You can goof around with Setup there. The D-delay is a very useful pedal, imho. Make sure you take a look at input and output gains. Tap the icon in the lower right corner and dial in your preferences. Mine(for the quit Lawrence Fritts backing tracks):
8. play
9. Listen and ponder whether to change stuff in your setup. It's easy to re-amp! Live re-amp is great for turning on/off overdrive pedals. I used it for my "rainy gravy" video.
10. Export. Ok, here's a crappy part. It's hard to export to your computer... If you have a soundcloud pro it's easy as pie but if you don't, then you need another app and copy/paste to that before exporting. I use an app called fourtracks for this. This step is where it's crappy. I export without backing track and then:
11. ...Mix in audacity. I have used the stereo widening trick that Isaacullah describes here.
11 b) Do away with the audacity step and export directly to your soundcloud with the backing track. Here is a sample of the Brown shoes track without audacity step.
12. Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Great stuff Pistolcat, I do the same except I like to run it into my amp to play along with my backing tracks or any song on my iPod and use the all the various effect pedals that can be added via ampkit software.
I bought the ampkit link online from Hong Kong for $15, which is very cheap.
