Has anyone done a cover of this song?

I recently bought the bottle o blues/smokey amp combo -- and on the sound sample page there was a 48 second demo of Jim Mcbride playing a pretty chill rendition:

does anyone have any tabs? or perhaps we can make some as a community here y'know? I'd love to learn it! what key is it?

oda,

I don't have the time to tab it right now, but it starts on the 2 draw on a low F, so it's in C; also, it's an 8-bar blues, very similar to Elmore James' "It Hurts Me Too". It then goes up to the 6 blow and does the melody an octave higher.

I don't have a low F, but the melody works on an A harp, played cross-harp, which is exactly a major 3rd above the recording.

I think the original was done by Mississippi Fred McDowel--of course I could be wrong--it's the version I learned, anyway.

I play with it on the harp by ear, but I really mostly just play it on a slide guitar. The original key of Fred's recording, (available on itunes) is D--the A harp played cross.

The version above, I think, might be played on an SBS tuned harp--a 14 hole harp that has the first 4 holes tuned an octave lower than the key of the harp--then starting a regular harp at hole 4.

It's a great melody. . .

This tune works really well with a "Bo Diddley" beat.

For what it's worth.....

Aerosmith does a cover of this song on the Honkin on Bobo album from a few years back. Actually the whole album is Blues covers.

Good point, Eharp--the melodies are really similar--in fact, I think I could do Kitchen in no time flat just because I already know Move--I gotta go try that!

OOPS! I said above that the song (McDowel version) was in D and to play A harp crossed--what I really meant there was that my brain was crossed and you should use a G harp to play it crossed!

Also, the SBS tuned harp thing might be "Simple bullshit stuff" too--in playing with it a bit I found that it could be done easily with a regular G harp--easily if you know the upper register well--I don't--but that will make it a good one for me to work on to learn it. . .

Thanks, oldwailer. I knew that wasn't right, but I waited for you to vindicate yourself. LOL I do what he's doing-a low F for the first part and a regular F for the second. Trying to do the whole thing on a low F is a lot harder! Don't know the high end too well, either. Its a good woodshed project.

Yo Tuckster--I tried this on my F SBS 14-holer--it works great. The SBS is tuned just like a Low F on the first 4 holes--then just like a regular F harp from there on up. Same as using two harps on a tune like this.

So I'm working on a version that incorporates the drone bass of the slide guitar with the melody--it's beginning to sound pretty cool.

If you want to hear the slide guitar doing it--it's here http://youtube.com/watch?v=3H50_sm4iGA

Another song--"It Hurts Me Too" is the same melody--

I never knew what a SBS was. Now that I do,it makes sense. Hope you get that slide part. That fella in the first vid was playing some sweet slide. Keb Mo plays better harp on his studio stuff. I wasn't too impressed with that harp playing. Still love him, though. Still can't get the high end right on a low F. I keep going into "Sitting on Top of the World" which is similar but not quite the same. Hope you'll post the vid, when you're ready.

I agree on keb's harp--he isn't the best on harp--but he does a good job in a very sparse kind of way. I love his guitar and singing.

If I get to a good point with this song on harp I'll post a vid--so far, my favorite way is to start out on a low C and go to regular C--I love the booming low notes. . .

The player of the first vid was Kenni Lee Burgess--he's the Adam Gussow of acoustic slide guitar on YT--I like him a lot and am studying his lessons.

Oldwailer,

You ought to be proud of it, it sounded fantastic in my opinion. Playing, technique, start, middle and ending!!! That low C sound is awesome, you got a real Sonny Boy II feel.

Youve inspired me to put in some more work on the low F, although I have enough trouble with 1, let alone 2 at once. Well done!

Well, thanks, Tryharp! Glad to be able to inspire something. The low C is a bitch to bend--but it sure sounds great! I love that 1 blow--I'll use any excuse to get to it. . .
