Does anyone use closed back speaker cabinets for harp? I have a single12" and a 2-10" closed back and really like the sound of both. I haven't run into a discussion about this on any of the harp forums.

I in the past with all amplification used closed back cabs for all instruments

I prefer that sound. Much more focused

These days I use all combos for everything since I stopped gigging my 63 bassman. Combos convenience outweighs the sonic difference. My go to harp amp is a fairly closed backed ampeg combo. Sounds tremendous with a tele too and no tube swaps needed ever.

I can't even begin to explain how great it is to be playing through an amp that isn't a compromise when switching instruments.

I do. But, what does that matter. I like the sound of what I use. I would think your 2-10 would be fantastic....for me.

It matters more whether you like the sound of what you are using more than what anyone else is using.

Closed vs. open back is just a generic battle.

Get real anal and fight about whether regular carbon batteries against alkaline batteries sound better in pedals.

Those battery arguments really do exist. However, I can actually give it more credit from experience than the open/closed back fight. But in the real world, Gracie summed it up----- it doesn't mean sh!t to a tree.

Tune it and play it.

I, too, prefer closed backs. To my ears, the sound out of them is crisper, more defined, and as Will has said, more focused. They just put the sound in a way I can hear much better on stage.

I don't use head/cabs at this point though. I want to...just haven't bought any yet. But every combo I've bought has been a closed back, or I've closed the back of it myself as much as I could.

Only open back amp I have is my Vypyr, and I usually have it on a stand. Problem is that with the 12" speaker I put in it, the backwash kills our drummer because it's usually set up in some close proximity to him. Although a couple of times, I've played a joke on him and switched the speaker leads so it phased backwards at him. I need to fabricate a removable back panel for the amp. It hasn't been as bad lately since I started using my Univox 15" cabinet with it, which is close-backed. I'm seriously considering chopping the Vypyr into a head, and making a cab out of the bottom.

This is a pic of what I did to a Classic 50. I know a lot of players don't like Peavey for harp. I use this in Praise bands because it is a clean sound. With a modified JT30 it will get somewhat dirty, but nothing like my HG50 4x10. Anyway, I have a 2x12 closed back cab that gives good punch and bottom. I have a 2x12 open cab with two Utahs that break up nicely. Thought the pic might give you some ideas on your Vypr project.

This is my first attempt @ sending a pic. Looks like I need to go back to practicing my forum skills...lol
Well I'll try some other time.

When I played regularly in a Praise band, I used the monitor cab from my PA. This gave me the best sound level to hear myself on stage. I ran the mic into an HCIII, a line out to amp head, and a line out to House PA. With three vocalists in the House monitor, I couldn't always hear myself through that monitor. The sound through my monitor cab is what led me to buy a 2x12 closed back cab. When I play blues, rock, or country, I like to use that cab with a 2x10 that is 2/3 closed back. I run a Bassman 50w head into them. I think the combo of open & closed cabs sounds better than one or the other. Then, on the other hand, I never get tired of the sound coming out of the HG50 4x10 open back! Have fun experimenting!

I'll get you some pics this week end.

Touching back on my idea of chopping the Vypyr...I drew up some rough sketches of what I have in mind on my computer the other day...
