I was at a pre-4th of July party last night at a friend's house which featured a huge jam session in the back yard with a sound engineer and board. The equipment was set up in the opening of the garage with monitors and PA on the outside. The vocal mics that the sound guy had on hand were all Shure Beta 58A mics. I swapped one of the mics out to test a vintage Electrovoice DS 35 mic (the model used by Bruce Springsteen and Geddy Lee of Rush, among others) that I picked up on eBay for $64 (shipped). I wanted to compare the audio performance. The vocalists were all pro blues singers. Supercardioid dynamic (Shure) vs. Cardioid Dynamic (EV). The old EV more than held its own against the Shure Beta 58. They both sounded outstanding. I could not tell much of a difference between the two, except that the EV mic was manufactured in the 1970's and the Shure mic is supposed to be cutting edge. And the Shure is easily twice the price. So much for progress and innovation in the 21st century. Specs below:

I like the Shure Beta 58 for vocals and harp. I sat in with a friend's band a couple of nights ago. I played and sang through one. It reproduced sound accurately. Whether that's good or bad was up to the audience to judge.

Oh, it's all good. I'm not complaining, just commenting. The Electrovoice DS35 mic has multiple capabilities, including acoustic guitar miking and drum miking. It's been called the "drummer's vocal mic" for its ability to keep the sound of the drums from bleeding into the mic.

I plan using it as a vocal/acoustic harp mic, since its ergonomics are not conducive to use as an amplified harp mic.
