French Suzuki endorser David Herzhaft asked me to post his version of 'Flight of the Bumblebee', played on a Suzuki Promaster:

Ridiculously good. I worked on this song on chromatic for a few weeks and basically gave up.

I've wondered if anyone ever played this on a diatonic. Very good indeed.

Showing off? Looks like he's just having fun to me. There's a fine line between showing off and showmanship, usually drawn with skill. This guy's got it.

Jeez, this forum's tough.

First we slate a guy for being famous and mediocre.
Now we're having a pop at someone who's really skilled.

Isn't all performance, essentially, "showing off"?

Well said. I thought it was pretty darn cool.

Impressive, indeed, given the technical limitations of the harp. Urbie Green (bone player for Benny Goodman) did a swing version on trombone back in the forties.
I wonder if he'll tab it out for us.

We're equal opportunity haters.

"I wonder if he'll tab it out for us."

Yeah, cause we could all play it if we only had the tablature.

@Timeistight..."Yeah, cause we could all play it if we only had the tablature."

I'm sure I could play it....just not so fast.
Might have to change the title to "Flight of the Downed-out Bumblebee."

Of course, it was a joke.

"Ridiculously good. " yeah, totally.

it was a very good joke FMWoodeye.

but seriously, i think guys like
winslow yerxa will actually tab this kinda stuff out!- i know he has done a john popper solo-

that kind of tabbing skill must be just as ridiculously hard as the above playing.

the guy is too good to poke fun at, even though this vid almost begs for it, if you grew up watching the lawrence welk show under protest.

My interpretation of the insinuation of 'showing off' is that the accuser can't play what is being played, therefore it's 'showing off'. If you've got it, flaunt it, baby. It's not as if he's playing mindless notes-it's a real deal composition.

And with my definition above, I'll just go ahead and say that I think he's showing off too. ;-) Damn...I have attempted FOTBB, but never put too much time into it. He slam-dunked it, then took it home and kissed it's mama on the mouth.

Any OBs in there, folks?

Great technique I'd like to hear more. Was the harp a customized harp in any way?

The blues is probably a good starting point in learning the harp! Help....don't shoot me!

But this guy is real good. High speed and accuracy on a real tough piece. And if I could play that good I would certainly want to show off.

Probably to my taste not quite up there, on an enjoyment level, with Charlie McCoys lip blistering Orange Blossom Special or Buddy Greene's Classical Medley.

For those who want to learn it, I think you can get the tabs from David, as it seems to be a lesson from his online harmonica school. The URL is here:

harmonicaschool.com/en

The email address is: contact@harmonicaschool.com

Send him and email and ask! here's another recent shcool video he sent me, two harps playing Bach's Badinerie:

Well, I guess I don't need the tabs because I read music. I think it's more impressive not being able to play the music from a chart than not being able to play it from tabs. In any event, I will have to put it third on my futility list, right behind dunking a basketball and being accepted to NASA's astronaut training program.

Nice modernized version of this. Everything has to be played PRECISELY on the money or it all falls apart completely in no time flat. I remember seeing the great Larry Adler do this on the old Johnny Carson Tonight show on TV several times and always used to make my jaw drop into the freaking basement.

Very cool! Perhaps a little "busy" for my taste (Ha! a bee pun!), but very entertaining! I loved the backing track... Made it much more modern than I was expecting. Cool!
