I just got a Zoom G3 after Isaac's brief review and demo. Anyone who has one want to share their favourite harp patches?

I've not really got anything yet that I'm super happy with, but there is a lot to play with on this device, so I'm confident that I will get there.

Isaac? I know there are others here with G3s too. I promise to share once I've played around more...

HI mrso&so! I'd be happy to share the patches I've got so far. It might take me a few days, however, because I'd have to download the zoom edit and share software onto my wife's computer (I use linux these days), and then transfer them off my G3 onto the computer. It's funny, the G3 is so easy to use as is, I haven't felt the need to even bother downloading the software! With my old RP155, it was the complete opposite! I'd only ever program it via the software because the hardware interface was so clunky! :)

Send me an e-mail ( ullah at archaeologist dot com ), and I'll send them over to ya as soon as I get some time to grab them off the machine...

The RP series has always been a PITA to program. I use the 250 and I always use the software as well to make changes.

Funny I just sold my old ZOOM acoustic effects box the A2 I believe it was. Good box I just never used it once I got the 250.

What playing context will you be using it with? What sounds good at home won't sound good recorded direct or live.

The best way to do it is to try and program patches at gig volume in a sound treated room. Then, record them direct and playback on a good studio-type set up.

On stage you'll find that the two biggest things to worry about are:

1. Feedback
2. Overall EQ

My suggestion is using as little gain as possible. Even guitar players agree that it is easy to dial in too much gain at home for live use. This brings me to the point about EQ and the importance having feedback headroom to cut through the mix.

What sounds great through headphones or at home in isolation will sound like @$$ 99.9% of the time when playing on stage with a full band.

Your only hope in playing with others is to do what you can to get a real sound check in and to make sure you leave yourself headroom.

Don't use too much bass or not enough treble. That will kill you live as well as having too much gain.

I have different scenes for playing with a band then when I play solo. By creating beatbox and bass patches, it was a little easier for me to eq things before gigging out...I was also able to set the patches at stage volume and made sure it was going to be easy to tweak my gain and eq live. I also played, recorded, and looped the patches for play back with my monitor and headphones while moving all around my practice space.

Finally, I maxed out my monitor and waved my mic right infront of it to make sure I wasn't going to have automatic feedback issues.

I bet I had at minimum 8hrs into my POD before playing out with it the first time. I already had a ton of experience with the effects part via my M13, so that was pretty much an after thought, but the actual amp models took a long time...and I was really only worried about volume before feedback and digital clipping.

I also A/B'ed all my amp sound against my VHT and HG2. That helped me with the volume and EQ part. For example, I had my initial amp patch way too dark. The HG2 had much more high end and bite.

Isaac, thanks a lot. I'll send you an email. I'm also a Linux user, so have not installed the software either. I'll have to use my wife's laptop to do this too.

I really like that the G3 is so easy to tweak on the fly, but the number of parameters you can change are a little overwhelming, especially for someone who is not familiar with the real amps they are modelling.
