"It´s interesting that people have to ASK why you need cheap harps. It´s the economy"

And because 80 years ago those same cheap harps were impeccable, and a harp didn't need to be made from materials that would put Superman into a coma!

Ressurecting this real fast because I have made a discovery over this past weekend. In terms of the cheap plastic plated harps Hohner makes (i.e. Piedmonts, Blue Ice, Hoodoo Blues), an improvement can be made in the sound.

Obviously, the plastic cover plates deaden the tone and volume. I took the cover plates off of some of my crappy old Jambones and slapped them on some of my Piedmonts. Now, they're still kinda difficult to play. Cheap Chinese reeds always will be. But the metal plates on them definitely opens the volume and tone up on them so they sound better.

Since the Jambone plates work, I would assume SP20 plates would as well if you have some blown 20's that you're willing to swap the plates out on for a while.

@crispy

You got lucky. I have a HM in A that's stiff as a board on the reeds.

If your in the uk the sonnyboy's special has got great tone and good volume and it will take loads of abuse and just keep its tone. because I have only been playing for a few months I do alot of repetitive work bending the same note over and over again and these just keep going and still sound sweet and are only 13.99 pounds from sonnyboy music store ebay. The swans are hard to bend and cut into your lip. The belcanto is atrocious you have to suck so hard your lungs bleed to get anything out of them. I thought vogenreiter would be good as they come from germany but after gapping and a bit of filing is still.unresponsive. For a mellow sound with plenty of richness to it I got some hohner super vamper off ebay I thinl they were old stock because they were in prestine condition and they stopped making these in the 70s. They are marine bands with differnt engraving on one of the cover plates. The european version sonnyboywilliamson|| used them when he was in Europe and they are always poppong up on ebay and no one seems to buy them except me and the most I spent was seven pound including postage. You will have a pleaseant suprise if you take either option.

I don't think anyone has commented on the Hurricane Hot House harps yet, so I will.

Utter crap. Leaky, hard to play, and sounded like garbage. One of the worst buys I have made (that includes a walking stick that I broke right when I got it and never really used). I felt guilty selling the rest to someone else at a loss.

I received a Blues Bender as a gift. It felt like a SP20 and actually played fairly well, but a reed went bad with in a month.

Neonlittledog, welcome to the forum!

A couple possibilities. I'm not sure on the exact size of the covers (I've got a Huang around here but I can't find it at the moment) but you might see if any other brands covers fit it. Aside from my antiqued cover Seydel (and possibly the Huang if I can find it) I grabbed a magnet and it stuck to every metal cover.

A couple other solutions come to mind. There is magnetic tape you can get at a hardware store. I don't know if it would hold up to the rigors of being on a harp but a strip along the lid might give you enough hold. (Inside I don't think there would be enough room). Failing that you might get a packet of those little disc magnets and some JB Weld and just attach them to the cover. (I'd read up on how best to attach magnets. I think if you have the coated ones (shiny instead of black) you should scuff the surface.

Or, you could see if you could find some special shaped magnets. There is a guy online supermagnetman.net who has all sorts of shapes. He might have something long that you could slide under the back edge of the cover? The only problem is, even although the magnets are super cheap it's $7.50 per order shipping. When I was playing around with attaching covers with magnets I found it was best to load up on magnets in one order rather than buying a few and seeing if they worked. (Some of the magnets are super cheap, a few cents each).

The best bet though, I think, would be to see if there are any covers that are already magnetic that you could swap. Depending on what fits (I'll keep looking for mine to see if I can figure it out) someone might have some spare covers around that they could give you at a bargain price.

(Anyone know if any other covers fit on Huangs?)

I have a Huang Silver Deluxe hanging in my office window as an ornament. I just put a magnetic bag clip to it. Nothing doing. The bag clip magnet is a powerful one too. Try some of the stuff Nate mentioned.

suzuki folkmaster coverplates are compatible with magnets and fit silvertone deluxes.

in fact all parts of a silvertone deluxe and a folkmaster are interchangeable.

now, that will only help with your silvertone deluxe.

for your star performer ,you could try epoxying a steel or iron plate to where you need the magnet to connect.or rivets, screws, etc.
