Got the call from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia to play Big River. This will be my fourth production. At this point I could direct it. "you be the Reverend Harvey Wilks? Well I could be."

Sadly, I have only received one call and was previously booked. I gave it to my most advanced student and helped him prepare. I did get to do Floyd Collins just this year. I also was the original Broadway harmonica player for the little known musical The Civil War, written by the guy who did Jekkyl and Hyde. Now that was an experience.
Our local Muni Opera put on a production of Big River early this past summer. Kinda got pulled into it out of the blue, and I had no clue what it was all about either. Needless to say, now I do. LOL. Who woulda thought there'd ever be a Broadway musical that's first note is played by a harmonica?
The movement called "Angel of Death" calls for a bass harmonica. The musical director looks at me during rehearsal and asks "Do you have a bass harp?" I told him I did not. He said "Well can you get one and the Muni can reimburse you for it?" I just laughed, and didn't tell him til after rehearsal why.
The whole run was a ton of fun though. I've used several of the licks from the score for solos on songs we do in my band. And one of the players, a girl about 16 or 17, came up and asked about learning to play harmonica. I gave her a small book about harp basics and directed her to Adam's tutorials, so hopefully one more harp player will be spawned from me doing that show. :-) ---------- Hawkeye Kane
