I've made several different versions of the LM386 amp (variously called Ruby, Little Gem, Noisy Cricket, etc.). The circuit that sounded the best for harp was the Noisy Cricket from Beavis Audio (http://www.beavisaudio.com/projects/NoisyCricket/), which also has the most detailed build instructions as well.
In the end, the LM386 chip doesn't have that much oomph (the LM386N is the most high-powered version, and will deliver 1 watt to a 4 ohm speaker). Pretty good tone can be had, so it's worth it if all you are after is a low wattage practice amp that can be powered via a 9-volt battery. It's also worth it as an entry into the world of audio electronics and amp building. If you want more advice on building solid state amplifiers voiced for harp, I'd be happy to start that conversation (and direct you to some good resources)! Hope that helps! ----------
