Im gona be getting a new harp case soon as my little Tweed case is full to the brim.

I'm thinking of getting a Hetrick harmonica case but i would like to know what the thoughts are of anyone on here who owns one.

They look like awesome cases and ive seem Ronnie Shellist's video reviews on youtube.

What i would really like to know is do the harps rattle around in the case?

I know the harps are kept in the case with plexiglass dividers but when the case is closed does the lid stop the harps from rattling around?

If anyone has one i would appriciate any feedback:o)

Thank you.

You might want to check out this option I came up with:

You can order the 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" x 4-1/2" Aluminum Case (Same one Hetrick uses) from Harbor Freight for $14.99:

http://www.harborfreight.com/11-1-2-half-inch-x-7-1-2-half-inch-x-4-1-2-half-inch-aluminum-case-36870.html

Then you can order a "Model CHC FI 19" or "Model CHC FI 20" Non-Flaking foam insert from www.CustomHarpCases.com for $37.95:

Model CHC FI 19:
http://customharpcases.com/khxc/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=CHCRF19

or

Model CHC FI 20:
http://customharpcases.com/khxc/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=CHC_FI_20

Seems to me that the case and foam insert would fit together perfect and you'd have yourself a nice case for $52.94 + shipping, which is quite a bit less than Hetricks prices, plus your harps won't jiggle around.

**Sorry, about not posting direct links, but I can't ever seem to get them to work on this forum? But here are some pics:

Picture of case from Harbor Frieght:

Picture of one of the foam inserts (Model CHC FI 20) from www.CustomHarpCases.com:

Foam insert for CHC 20. Durable Non-Flaking foam. 20 Diatonic Harp slots. 1 - 12 or 16 hole chromatic slot. 1 bullet mic cutout. 1 Lone Wolf Delay or single effect Boss pedal. Business Card slot. Fits most diatonics.

Picture of one of the foam inserts (Model CHC FI 19) from www.CustomHarpCases.com:

Foam insert for CHC 19. Durable Non-Flaking foam. 20 Diatonic Harp slots. 1 - 12 or 16 hole chromatic slot. 1 bullet mic cutout. 1 Lone Wolf Delay or single effect Boss pedal. Business Card slot. Fits most diatonics.

You'd end up with something like this:

This guy is in the UK.
slimscustomcases

I made this one myself.
Bought a vintage leather briefcase off E-Bay
Got some lexan sheet cut to correct width from the Bay too.
Cut slots to interlink and a blob from a hot glue gun to keep them in.

I have the same case Matzen mentions. Once I get a round tuit I plan to buy one of those foam inserts-I believe JoeL did the very same thing.

7LJI-are you a Jet Mech? i see the P&W sticker on your case. I worked on P&W F-100/F-229(F-15) engines for 21 years.

Small world-very cool, 7L.

On the original topic-yes, those cases will rattle unless you add a piece of foam at the top. It is considerably cheaper to take the other route, which is buying the same exact case from Harbor Freight or elsewhere and getting the inserts.

Also, reference this old thread for some great storage ideas.

@7LimitJI: What did you use to cut the slots in the Lexan? In the past I had a friend with special tools who could cu the stuff for me. I had troubles when trying to do it on my own. I have a alminium briefcase that has worn out foam, maybe I could try the lexan in it.

I have the Hetrick case. It rattles, but that's of no issue to me. I got it when they very first came out...like probably one of the first orders.

I just checked out the other site mentioned. I went ahead and ordered a 20-harp insert for my Hohner briefcase.

I am going to get a case from Slim eventually, I got a bid and everything, but now I gotta get the money together.

Thanks guys. I had feeling it would rattle.

I do like the idea of the harps being able to breath with the plexiglass and a small piece of foam shouldn't be a problem
To get hold of.

I think i will check out the shipping rates to the UK for harbour freight. The combined shipping for the foam insert and case could take the price up to the the price of a Hetrick anyway.

Ant, I'd be willing to bet money(Renminbi?)that those cases are made in China, and perhaps they are sold thru different companies. Does the UK have an equivalent of HF there? Some sort of hardware bargain store? Might be worth checking out before you get raped by shipping costs.

@Matzen
I used a hacksaw. It cuts very easily.
Far easier than perspex as it will not crack or split.

@ Ant
They don't rattle very much. The lexan is better than foam as it does not degrade and fill your harps with little bits of foam.

I did what Matzen did. I live close to a Harbor Freight and got the case cheaper. It was on sale for $5.It ended up looking like this:

It's the same case that Hetrick and Hal Iwan use. So far, it's great. It holds a lot. It doesn't look too much like a purse.

@Todd, i may shop around here, i have seen hardware cases here before but the Hetrick case just seems like less hassle plus the exchange rate with the dollar here is pretty good as long as customs dont rape me for it, lol!!

I have thought about making my own case but i never get round to it and the last time i tried to cut foam i made a mess of it.

I have thought about Slims custom cases but i dont like the cases he uses, no disrespect to the guy they look like well made sturdy cases but i just dont like the way they open up. I'm after a small compact case like the Hetrick one.

I think that's why www.CustomHarpCases.com uses Non-Flaking (closed cell?) foam?

Thanks for that Ron.I have just checked Habour Freight and all i can find are the products and the store locator so i guess they dont ship to the U.K.

I may well take you up on the offer Ron and go with what Matzan advised. Im going to email Custom harp cases and find out how much shipping is to the U.K. for the foam insert.

That may well work out alot cheaper:o)

I'll email you and let you know buddy.

They used to sell the 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" x 4-1/2" Aluminum Case on Amazon as well. I just checked and it looks like they are out of stock right now.

Just noticed slim does standard type cases too

aluminium case

Been looking at the price of 25mm sheet of platazote foam he uses.
Bloody expensive!!! Makes his aluminium case a bit of a bargain.

PS I'm not in any way affiliated to Slim.
Just looking for the most economical way to do things.
Plus I like making my own stuff more :o)

Anybody know if the foam inserts pictured in Matzen's post are still available anywhere?

I've had one of these for years, but now need another and the CustomHarpCases.com site is long gone.

(Not looking for tips on cutting foam yourself - I'm aware of all that - just if they're still available pre-made)

The owner of that site and producer of the foam inserts, Hal Iwan passed away a number of years ago. Greg Heumann bought the gaskets part of his business, but I don't think he picked up the foam insert part. Maybe, he knows if anyone bought it.

I have a Hetrick---Love it
U can store 3 times the amount of harps if stored vertically---like the hetrick
however-after owning it for awhile---I saw that harbor fright had my exact case

Matzon posted
ou can order the 11-1/2" x 7-1/2" x 4-1/2" Aluminum Case (Same one Hetrick uses) from Harbor Freight for $14.99:

http://www.harborfreight.com/11-1-2-half-inch-x-7-1-2-half-inch-x-4-1-2-half-inch-aluminum-case-36870.html

I bought 2 in the store-exact same case- minus dividers

Mine had plexi dividers---Im gonna cut new ones on table saw with approx 1/8" thick pressed wood

pt being I much prefer either the plexi or wood over foam---foam takes up way to much space
Im able to store all keys x 12
I can store almost 50 harps---due to no foam and vertical stack
as I use all 12 keys reg tune---bunch minor tuned---some major tuned melody makers--it wworks great

I have room for 9 volts---pics---tools for harp-lights etc
highly suggest vertical stacking --no foam
