Another Saturday, another video. That's right....I just don't quit! It's my 5 month anniversary playing harp so I celebrated. I didn't set out to copy SBWII's version. I just kind of did my own thing in the style of the song. Pretty much like I do with most songs I play. One of these days I'll learn a song note for note.
I moved to the living room and a hand held camera rather then the basement and the webcam. Better acoustics. I need all the help I can get...lol.
your not playing the classic 'one way out' riff so it's hard to identify the tune - ends up sounding like random noodling. i'd suggest you map out the specific riff it takes to make the tune sound like the tune - know what i mean?
no harp with me right now but something like: 2D 2D 2D" 1D 2D 2D" 1D 2D" 2D 2D 2D 2D" 1D 2D
Good Job Tommy, It takes balls putting it out there after only 5 months. Berry has some good points. and you might try playing along with this backing track.
I know it's the Allman Bros. version but It will help you keep time and build structure to what your doing. Would love to see a follow up video in a couple of weeks to see your progress. ----------
Not playing the classic riff? What!? I can hear it! LOL
Actually, when I played it originally, I thought I had the basic sound of the riff even though it wasn't exact as in how Sonny Boy does it. But then again, I wasn't trying to, as I said in my post above the video. Kind of my own jam.
But as you say, and I appreciate it, when I listened to it played back yesterday I was like...huh? I didn't hear the tune. I couldn't make out what song I was playing. But once I started singing it to myself and then started the video over "then" I could hear it. But I agree, it is a bit blurry.
Now I will give my excuse..lol. When i post these videos (I've posted a few) I always hope they are at least somewhat good, but I don't do them as a final rendition of a song or "look what I figured out." They are public viewings of my practice. It's part of a few hours of practicing by playing songs. In this particular practice - and what causes some of the blurred lines - is my attempt at tongue blocking and playing chords along with single notes. I was trying octaves (one or two), slaps, tongue blocks and single notes. So a lot of the tune got lost in the sauce I guess. I hear it when I play it back. Generally I like to do my own thing. I don't learn many songs note for note. I'm trying though; because I know it will be better to first know the song well before altering it to fit me. But I like to just jam! I work a song a little then move on, then come back to it and again go to something else, then back again, over and over. Crap, I don't know how many different videos I did on "Help me." lmao.
Thanks for the tips, and the little bit of tab there. Thanks for commenting too. Getting any comment is always good, although unusual...lol. Silence speaks volumes I guess.
@stickman.
Thanks for the backing track. I just realized I have that site bookmarked. Forgot. All my videos will at some point probably have a follow up. That's sort of the the point. A public work in progress. Yesterday I worked on "Last Night" (Paul Butterfield version) for a couple of hours. I actually did close to 50 reps! I was starting to record it but kept forgetting the words, then the melody and so on. Then my wife came home and I stopped. Maybe next week. But again...it will be one of my practice sessions, hopefully the song will be recognizable at least.
After reading the above posts I started to wonder because something didn't seem right. So I played Sonny Boys version. Yea, I can see now what Barry is saying with his tab. That is definitely different but that is what confused me about his post...those single notes. I couldn't figure where they fit in. But after listening to Sonny's version again, I can see that is totally different. And that is exactly what I wasn't playing. Or trying to play either.
I wasn't playing Sonny Boy's version or setting out to. It was based on his version as I said in my original post. "It was in the style of the song." But as I also said in the comments in the video itself, it was also mixed with the Allman Brothers and my own thing. I'm not doing single notes as I was more or less "trying" to copy the Allman brothers' guitar riffs....the rhythm. On Sonny Boys version I guess it would be the bass line. I was playing Rhythm more or less.
I'm not saying this now makes it all better, I'm just saying it clears up "my" confusion over "where do those notes fit?" That Barry posted. I wasn't playing or trying to play the Sonny Boy version. Only the Style of One Way out.
It became more clear when I tried the chords Stickman posted. That is Sonny Boy's song. I don't like that way. I like,the Allman Brothers opening. It carries more of the tune in it. With SBWII, if not for the bass line you'd never know what song that is. Allman Bros? Immediately. ---------- Tommy
Does anybody know of a good version of the song on youtube that uses harp? Most bands and jams try to pattern after the Allman Brothers version. Jay ---------- Music speaks where words fail.
If you download Audacity and record vocals then hit record again and add harp where you feel it fits in, not sure if this helps but i reckon you chose a pretty tricky number to jam with.
