I don't have enough experience to give any pointers but I can tell you something I don't like, that many people do (in many things...not just harp). If someone makes a mistake, in anything, I would rather see them just keep going or figure a way to cover it (or recover) somehow. Even in practice or something that might seem unimportant at the time. It's about getting into good habits and out of bad ones in my opinion.
But other than that, I thought that was great. I just put my harps away and was tempted to go get them back and play along (well....try to).
eddieT i just put it on you tube and let it play while i recorded with my webcam. if you type sonny boy help me on youtube scroll down about 4 or 5 there is a backing track in the key of G. for a C harp. rubes thanks buddy for your comment. tommy the hat.. you are right i need to work on trying to just recover with out making it known that i messed up GREAT feedback on that thank you. there is somthing about recordeing that makes me nervous when i dont record it comes out perfect lol.
How long have you been playing? Maybe it's a matter of progress. The way I look at it is if you've been playing a long time then maybe you aren't quite pleased. If you've been playing for a sort period of time I would be very pleased. Have you seen the version from sQrin? Check it out.
Maybe I didn't include that I like your playing and only include the version above as something to compare for yourself. You might find things that you like and/or don't like. I wasn't saying "Hey here's somebody better". Keep it up man.
im going on year 7 not quite like 1month away. i didnt think any of the sort. i want to do what ever i have to to be the best that i can possibly be when it comes to music. so even if i get rude comments( which yours WAS NOT ) i still take it in and look at it in thier eyes. thanks Hondo for this!
http://youtu.be/qE43LwqOUPM o i misunderstood this is link is for my video the other link was for the backing track

Sorry to butt in on your thread Toxic Tone but I have a question after watching the video that Hondo posted of sQrin playing. At 15 seconds in (it starts at 14) he hits a note I can't find on my harp (a SP20 in "A"). Any help as to what he is doing would be great....that is a sweet little sound at 14-15 seconds. I just can't figure it out.
Tommy- sQrin is playing a Bb and according to his own notes that's a 4 draw to a 4 blow. Hope that helps. If you look up that video on his youtube channel, I think you can find the tab and backtrack that he uses.

What exactly is a "low" F. Or any other Low harp for that matter. Dumb question I know.
The harmonica sounds very very good. Your vocals are lousy. You sound exactly like a white boy trying to "be black" (whatever that is) and you don't make it. Try singing it like it was YOU and not sonny boy or anybody else. Otherwise, a fine job. A low harp is low. Harps go from G to F# in pitch. So F# is too high! Low harps are cool, especially if you aren't trying to bend-- Suzuki only makes low F, but Seydel is making some cool low harps--and there's the new Thunderbird, must try not to buy more harmonicas--have too many!

toxic I think your playing is very good , you have a good sense of timing , and I also think that you can sing very well ,you have to just let it go ( some alcoholic beverages might help :p )the problem is that after 655 retakes your vocal will become a bit sloppy. The shitty camera doesn't help either. Good job man , I like it.
Gmacleod , if I am not mistaken , and judging by his east europen heavy accent , Sorin form this forum and Sqrin from youtube are the same person.
Tommy my backing track is in the same key that Sonny Boy is playing, F , so you need a Bb harp . If you cannot get one I might be able to help you by transposing the backing track to the key of E so you can use your A harp .Let me know if you want me to. Also a low harp is a harp that is tuned one octave lower than the regular one. ---------- Free video harp tabs and backing tracks
joeleebush great feedback i will try n do that n see if it still comes out good. low F is awsome to bend on. just imo. yea the whole me saying i messed up is a habit it seems. i keep doing that like at my gigs and i think its getting to ppl so i am trying to not say anthing. its a habit i didnt know i had intill i knew i had it lol. thanks yall you guys are really helping me get better i dont know what i would do with out yall lol
thanks sorin. hey i could use one of those backing tracks transposed to C if u can. so i can put on a cd an practice in my car. yea i tend to do better when i drink a little lol. thank u for that
toxic_tone: I think it is great seeing a young person interested in the blues! To be honest the quality of the recording is pretty bad. Most all videos I watch on these forums are of similar quality sonically. Many have better video, but audio wise they are much the same.
As far as your playing goes. I think you are doing fine. Another thing I see over and over again on these forums is: people over exaggerating the playing or trying to come off as a 80 year old player at 25 years of age. I found your playing to be neither. People who just watch these youtube videos are clueless to how wild the greats were in their youth. That is pretty much what brought them to peoples attention. I have heard the old guys tell countless tales of their wildness in their youth. The blues is about being where one is in their life. A young person is fired up with hormones. To see one playing like an old man is embarssing to me.
Your voice is pretty raw but that is ok. You sounded like your natural voice and that is a good thing. Again all the great players started out raw and flaunted it because that was who they were. Keep singing in all your waking hours and it will improve over time. Time is the real thing. It takes a lifetime to get presence of sound like SBWII. It can't be rushed with custom harps, lessons, etc. The little things a master does and doesn't do are what sets them apart from the pack. Todays players are more and more walls of sounds that miss the point of being a master player and are being heralded as masters but not in my book. I say all this to give you food for thought.
I assume you were going for a near note for note harp thing. That is cool but I would like to see you put your own sound on the track. Your playing reminded me of me back when I was starting out! I consider 7 years a mere baby of a player so please take this a positive. Keep on blowing! Sorin, thanks. My next harp purchase will be Bb, don't worry about transposing...thanks anyway. And thanks for the note on lower key harps being an octave lower. So I'm guessing that if you think the higher key is too high for the song or how you might want to play it, you can still use the proper key but drop an octave lower....a feeling thing. This way you don't have to change the key of the song either. (?)
By the way Toxic, I didn't think the vocals were bad. Taking into consideration the recording/sound medium etc. Just another note on acknowledging mistakes. For the time and verbiage it takes you to tell us you screwed up you could have just improvised alternate words into the song! Cover up!!!! "Mistake? what mistake?" lol
thanks waltertore very cool stuff. it actually gives me more motavation reading your comment. i guesss i kinda do try n rush it a bit when it comes to sounding like SBW or anyone else that is great. i watch then and its just so amazing to me how the sound that i want to sound like it cuz i know i liked it so, so should others. yes i did try n go note for note except for some of the end part. i want to learn it perfect first then put my spin on it.
you know i got in a fight with my girlfriend last night during my gig. well i went to smoke a cig outside and i was so down i grabbed my Low F and started playing. man i could of played for hours.... intill she came outside......but my point of this comment is that, what u said about blues being where you are in your life, is actually very true to me. i played the most soulfull id played in a long time. all i know is i loved how i was playing better then any song ive played in gigs or songs ive practiced. im in a sense addicted to feeling sad. what sucks is i feel like im not sad enough! lol if that makes any sense. anyway thanks again walter for ur thoughts

keep the faith and keep following your dreams toxic_tone! Plus you got the rest of your life to get there. Nothing is sadder than watching people rush to the future and miss the present :-) All the gold lies in the moment. That is what the greats were able to do so well.
