Hi,

Just completed my second Alnicomagnet Harp Amp mod.
The first was a Peavey Royal 8. It also got a 8" Weber speaker and some valves from Watford Valves in the UK. Very happy with it.

After having the amp and mod kit sitting in my shed for over a year I found the time to get started on the VHT 6 yesterday - only took me a day!

Manji (A), Superlux D112/C, Speaker is a Cannabis Rex......

.....So how do you upload sound files on this forum? I was hoping for some comments / suggestions etc.

Paul

Think I've got it. Levels are a bit low - probably need headphones but here it is:

I use a box sharing account to post stuff like that. There's an 'embed widget' if you can find it, which is very handy.
The embed code is not under the obvious 'share' menu. It's under 'more options' or 'other options', something of that type. You'll find it if you wanna go that way.

Re the amp mod, I reckon that is cool. My first 'big' step was an alnicomagnet kit in a Valve junior, and it was a fine mod, much superior to the 'lone wolf' mod imho, and on reflection because it was still a bit edgy for feedback compared to the relatively tame lone wolf approach, but the sound of the amp was much livelier thanks to the preamp cathode bias approach I believe. Nigel has worked out a good sound for harp I think.

I think the VHT would be a very good thing, thanks largely to the 10" speaker. I think better than an 8", provided there's a big enough box for it. I don't like a 10" in a box made for an 8" etc. in fact, I think the typical tweed champ cab with 8" could do to be a bit larger as it is.
I bet yours is a good sounding thing

I sold my 'alnicomagnet' Valve jr, and my 'hartamps' Valve jr, which a super little guitar amp, modded with a switchable preamp bias and 4 stage switchable gain structure plus tone pot.. Just sold it to the guitarist in my band, so now have only 1 Valve Jr remaining. It's the lone wolf mod, but I also modded it to take a 6V6GT power tubebinstead of el84, and I actually completely hand built the circuit board as a turret board, so it's a handwired 6V6 Valve jr with lone wolf mods. I'm thinking I might rebuild it as something else. I was thinking maybe a champ with Memphis Mini mods, or maybe a Kalamazoo. I still have the original Version 3 circuit board so I could easily turn it back to an alnicomagnet-type Valve junior for that matter...
But, I think I have other projects before building another 5 watt amp.
There's a neat project for turning a Valve Jr into a Reverb tank for that matter.
I'd love to hear your amp. I hope you get the soundclip sharing sorted out.

Ah, crossed post. I listened briefly, to clips 1,2 and 4, because I'm up late and should hit the sack right now. I'm not sure I could hear a big difference but through my phone speaker, probably not likely anyhow
How would you describe the way you think it's changed?

Yes crossed post.

Mainly I think it has taken some of the harshness out of it.
Can't really detect any effect of the impedance switch mod.
Early days yet though - takes me time to get to know / understand it.

I also think the recording is very poor: I was standing fairly close to the recorder so you may be getting more of me than the amp. The levels are too low as mentioned.

The difference is quite subtle (too subtle for the recording?)

It definitely sounds better live than in the recording - looks like I have stuff to learn about recording too!

Thanks and Goodnight SuperBee
