I went back into BOX looking for practice material and found these:
Embrace the 3
Bottle of Blues 2 6+ 4...
008 - MN Mark at Square Grouper twiddles
In my file, they are credited as 'by pkpennington', which is me. They aren't mine. I merely copied them. BOX is a mystery to me, need to study it some more. Anyway, who put them up originally? SuperBee, MTG?
Coincidently, they cover exactly what I've been concentrating on, 3 and other bends and twiddles. So, a great help.

Yes, they were mine I think. I'd forgotten about the twiddles, they sound a useful tool to have in the box.

Looks like my rollin and tumblin lick has disappeared again. That's ok, I need to practice it again anyway.

Hey you guys

https://app.box.com/s/sx68ed49d8m4acntqqlyw1r4y2zdvlwe

See if you can paste that link in your browser.

It's something I've been working on. You'll need excel to open it properly I think.

I turned the old "artist and key" PDF into a spreadsheet to make it easier to search and analyse.

There is still more to come, I'm working on the very messy 'various artist' albums, only about 800 titles to go now.

But if you are interested please have s look.

One thing I've thought while working on this is that I'm rather dubious about some of the info. But I haven't listened to lots of the recordings so I have to take it largely at face value. One good thing about making the data available in a spreadsheet is that it can easily be corrected (or corrupted)

I'll be proceeding with corrections and updates very slowly.

I have insisted on calling 10th position where C chromatics are played in Eflat. I don't care that it's just like 3rd but with the button held in for the entire song. It's still 10th position if you play a C harp in Eb.

And I think there are places where the chap who originally compiled this info (amazing job!) was just doing his best and may have got it wrong. I'm not at all sure about the 3rd position songs where there is a solo with s few bars of chromatic. I think it's possible it's just a lot of draw octaves on s diatonic at times.
So take it with a few grains of salt is what I'm saying. It's still a fantastic list of harp songs.

Wasn't me...this time.
We're away from home for the summer and I've been trying to make do with an iPad. Now have a reason to get a laptop. Need to see that list.

Hi Fil, I remember summer. That seems half a world away.
;)

I can't see those you mentioned in the OP either.

Anyway, I'm not sure my Gussow really complemented my playing on that one, or if he heard something else.

I think you'll enjoy the spreadsheet. I'll bring out the updated one at some point.
It doesn't have everything, and is probably 15 years behind (guessing) but it's remarkable just what is there.

i have actually completed the list.

i think a lot of folks will find this handy or at least interesting.

you may know the original list which is available online at David Barrett's Harmonica Masterclass site.

Basically, a fellow went through a bunch of record albums, mostly blues, where there was usually a significant number of tracks featuring harmonica. there are some exceptions. i've seen whole albums on the list where there are only 1 or 2 songs featuring harmonica.

but in the final washup there are around 7000 recordings. some are no doubt duplicated on various reissues and compilations, but its still a lot.

the pdf file runs to a lot of pages, and i personally found it a pill to search. the harp player is often not the person named on the album, often you may only know the name of the song and not the album, or maybe you want 3rd position songs, or songs to play a Bb harp, or songs for chromatic harp, or James Cotton songs. with the pdf its not so easy to do searches for things like that.

so i decided to put the information into a spreadsheet, which then enables me to organise it in various ways.

i have extracted the info and put it into columns. Harp player's name, album name, song name, Album artist name, Song Key, harp key (sometimes more than 1 per track), Position (sometimes 'multiple') and notes about the performance. The notes include details of which key harp on fills, solos, intros, who plays which harp etc. i need to keep all the info pertaining to each track withing a single row.

this now allows me to not only filter and search for information easily, as mentioned above, but also to do pivot tables which allow easy analysis of the information, such as the relative popularity of 1, 2nd and 3rd position in these recordings, or whether Jr Wells used a particular key more commonly than others.

and you can search for a title and find all versions of that title by different artists, so if working on your own version there is a good chance you might find something you weren't previously aware of.

and of course, the basic purpose is to allow you to quickly find the right harp to jam along with the track.

i have 'corrected' some info where i knew it was wrong.
i mentioned the 3rd position/10th position thing for chromatic already. i also gave Lazy Lester his own name; he'd been identified as 'Jay Miller' on several records. JM was actually the producer at Excello records. LL is Leslie Johnson.
I'm sure there are some other things. If you get the spreadsheet and find errors, please let me know.

At some point i might try to present this info in a different way but for now i think its pretty useful.

I haven't posted the completed spreadsheet yet. i'll play around with it a little before i do. in the meantime, the one i posted at the link above is quite handy and has 90% of the tracks

Ha! i am still finding and correcting glitches.

one thing i like to do is make pivot tables. i was pivoting the info to see how many actual albums are in this data and i found a few problems, which i have corrected

in the process i begin to notice things about the collection.

there are 528 albums listed. i'd say it's someone's personal collection.

and i can say they were a big fan of some particular artists

the 'classic' players are well represented. those are my main interest. Cotton, the Walters, the Williamsons, Sonny Terry, Snooky Pryor, Jr Wells, Carey Bell, George Smith et al

but also a lot of paul deLay (10 albums)

and 16 from Charlie Musselwhite

9 Gary Primich albums, 8 James Harman, 5 Kim Wilson plus 11 Thunderbirds albums, 10 Nightcats (Rick Estrin), 7 Mark Hummel, 8 R. J. Mischo, 16 Rod Piazza counting the Bacon Fat albums, and 11 William Clarke albums.

There are also plenty of gaps. Nothing from Jason Ricci for instance.

there are 7162 tracks
456 have No Harp
The Harp player on 387 is Kim Wilson
293 Cotton
292 Jacobs
222 Piazza
209 Blackmore
208 Williamson (Sonny Boy 1)
183 Burnett
181 Bell
177 Smith (George)
176 Miller (Sonny Boy 2)
167 Horton
159 Moore (Slim Harpo)
158 Primich
151 Estrin
145 Reed
143 Clarke
131 deLay

Mark Hummel, Richard Duran, R.J. Misco, Snookey pryor, James harman, Sam Myers, and Paul Butterfield all feature on over 100 tracks each
