I began tongue blocking the latter part of 2016. I've now been playing for a few months over a year total. My repertoire is very marginal, but growing. But, I am beginning to feel like I can say I "play" the Harmonica. A long way to go yet! Found my first over bend a bit ago and very limited experience in the upper octave. Still working on timing and getting out of habitual riffs, licks and runs. But here is a little sample if where I'm at.

You certainly can say you play. You've gone pretty far in a relatively short time. And most of us have a long way to go yet.

That's not bad man. It's musical. You know how many demoes there are on Facebook of people playing notes that just give me that "nails on a chalkboard" feeling.

Your sounding very good for the time you ve got in. But ... in my opinion....

Leave alone the overblows and extra advanced stuff. It's much better to be able to do one thing well, than do everything mediocre. I have tried overblows just to see if I can do them, but not much more.

I focus mostly on the core things.... tone, intonation, adding different layers to my sound, being able to play everything tb and lp, etc. I might be wrong, but I feel that if you have solid foundational skills .... there is not much you can't learn to play relatively quickly.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

Thanks Fill and Killa, I really enjoy the encouraging words!

Killa I agree with you sentiments on overbends, they will only occupy a very marginal amount of my practice. The music I endeavor? to play now does not include them at the moment.

Your thought process sounds very akin to my own.

Yea, just my 2 cents. No wrong or right way. But the average "blues shtick" (as MTG would say) is mostly about Tone, Melody, Rhythm ... the simple things.

I'm a VERY lick based player. Even though I modify those licks to the point were they're no longer recognizable sometimes. And modify them to fit the tempo/rythm/feel of the song. But they re still licks.

However something Mr.Rolly Platt Recently said to me, bursted that bubble a bit. He said you should try to evolve beyond playing licks and learn to play unique things that apply to the song your playing to.

I understand what he's saying. However, it's a little above my pay grade right now, I think. So I'll keep it in the back of my mind until I'm good enough to utilize it. Lol.

I'm not ready for unique yet, I still desire mimicry! Ha!
