I've been messing around with mics a fair bit recently, with some success and some disappointment. Ebay has so many vintage or hand made high z or dual z mics that come up it's becoming a bit of a problem! Slight signs of addiction showing...

My question is this though...

What easily available mic, would you say offers the closest to that coveted, over driven Chicago amplified sound?

My reasoning behind this question is simple, you can't expect to always be able to get your hands on specific, unique, one off vintage, or hand made boutique microphones for ever and ever, again and again .

So far, I'd say the closest for me is a sm57 with imt.

What would you say is the best that you have tried?

Rules are simple, it has to be manufactured by a company with international distribution, in production now and available. And I don't want any discussions on the importance of technique over kit, we all know that's a major factor.

What do you think makes the pyle pro 'better' than the sm57?
I've got both and I bounce back between them in equal measure.

I agree. It would be a shure mic for sure ... lol, i crack myself up.

No but seriously .. i would say 57, 58, 545 .. pick your poison. The new 545 isn't all that different from what im told, but either way.

Ian. I think what makes the pyle pro "better" is

#1 The price. $10 vs $100 for a 57. You can literally have 10 of these for the price of a real 57.

#2 Again because its cheaper (and you get what you pay for) the element is cheaper. It replicates the sound less effectively and has a lower headroom. Which is crap for recording, but for getting breakup its great. Hense the reason harp players live cheap chinese tape recorder mics. They won't perfectly and crisply record anything, but they sure give you that fat driven chicago sound.

#3 BECAUSE THEY ARE $10!! I had to say that one again. I mean what can you buy for $10 that's worth anything now a days?

Just the fact that your even going back and forth between the real sm57 and the Pyle speaks volumes about this mic.

This is also the reason i kindof try to talk alot of beginning players out of buying $200 mics. Because even though they are great, surely you can learn alot more about tone by having 20 different $10 mics. That's just my opinion though.

Ah, I should be getting modern mics. I really should. But I've just picked up a 50s jt30 retrofitted with a CM.
Sennheiser 609 or 906 will be my next mic. It's designed to mic up speaker cabs. Not cheap. I dunno if there's a knock-off equivalent?
Superlux PRA-628 MKii might be the go.

Mer2112. I have a Shaker Madcat i would be willing to sell/trade, if your interested. The madcat allows you to get some really great hand effects. And has a VC aswell.
