That sounds like just the thing. Really good. Are you going be playing that 'acoustic' into the vocal mic, or 'amped' through your loud amp?

Cheers! I've had that question cross my mind, but Haven't tried it with a mic yet. Maybe a loose cup on a mic to the amp. I'll try both ways on Saturday. 2 nd gig coming up, this time a 3 set job, so I'm on a steep curve to get a few things up to speed.
I found a description in Tom Ball's big Walter/little Walter licks book.

Either way, given your band, it's going to be high-energy stuff. Should be really good. They'll be kicking tables out the way and all sorts.

We play that one, but more gently and a simpler harp part which I picked up from one of the many versions. That one starts the phrase with 4D then (63)B stabs and tongue-flutter, for "well I rolled and I tumbled". Which at least is a chance to offload some air!

This is kind of strange. The file In the OP has gone missing. It's been deleted from the 'lick vault' shared folder, along with an image file which I'm yet to identify. Not a big deal but I wonder if it's an accident or confusion?

SB, that was me, confused. I didn't realize that I was messing in the shared folder, although it should have been obvious, and it looked like a bunch of duplicate files in my BOX app. I set about trashing what I thought are dup files. I am a true dinosaur regarding these things and should have left well enough alone. I am sorry and hope I haven't caused irreparable damage. I had spent a good part of the afternoon, unsuccessfully, trying to figure out how to imbed a sound file from my IPAD.

No worries Fil. It's only 2 files and I have the originals elsewhere.

That's all cool Fil. I'm glad to understand. Got a message from 'box' that files had been deleted but couldn't tell why. Yeah they were nothing special. I'd have the originals somewhere anyway.

SuperBee, please take a look at the shared folder. I was going thru some of my Box files and some that I opened seem to have ended up in the shared file. If that looks to be the case, please let me know. One is 172753mp4a that I'm happy to have there. The other is something about ten ways to use Box. Don't need that. If you see that MP4, it's one I've tried to figure out how to imbed in a beginners forum post for comment. It's taken from a guitar solo in Paul Lamb's Tuesday Blues. Comments?
Sorry to muck the folder. Tryin' to get a handle on it.

All I can say is......wow! SuperBee is that you and your guys doing that? Is it possible to get an mp3 version for private use please?

No tomoteij, the file of me playing was accidentally deleted. The file up there is the classic cut of the 'baby face Leroy trio' aka muddy waters, little Walter and baby face Leroy.

Hey Bee, I've been struggling with this song recently. Any chance of you reposting the sound file of yours that got deleted previously? Or a newer one? I'd be interested to hear your take. Cheers.

Sure Bronzewailer. We've just started rehearsal of this song again so I need to brush up on it.
We tried to play it in the band a few times and eventually dropped it due to cacophonous issues and lack of mellowness. But a change of personnel has prompted a revival of the tune. it seems to be trending up with some different vibes prevailing.
I spent some time with Tom Ball's description of the 'baby face Leroy trio' record. He has nailed the timing and this caused problems when I tried to play with others who have learned from blues-rock act renditions, in which the timing has been slightly altered.
Anyway, I'll either create a new recording or find the old one and fix the link.
But what I'm trying to do is based on the description Tom gives in his collection of little Walter and big Walter licks.

Thanks Bee. It sounds like it would be a challenge in a band context, especially playing with guys who've learned different versions. I'm sure you'll have a great version though! Looking forward.

here goes. it took a while to get around to, i'm sorry.

this works when i plsy along with the muddy waters record, the one recorded at chess in protest at the 'parkway' record with baby face leroy. should work with the earlier record too. and its been working in rehearsal with my band, but on stage the other night it rolled and tumbled right off the rails and wound up in the bottom of the canyon. i dont know why. theres a recording, which may demonstrate what went wrong. i think the guitar just took off and did its own thing and the drummer couldnt catch up, the bass played with the drums but they were like playingf half-time i think. i gave up and sat out

Thanks SuperBee. I like your take. It gives me confidence that I am sort of on the right track. I will have to resign myself to being a very pale imitation of LW.

Sounds like you did the right thing bowing out when the train left the tracks. Discretion is the better part of valour, or some such, eh?

I will show my version when I get it into passable shape.

Cheers!

I sat down and played along with the record before I recorded that, but I think there's a chance I'm much better at playing along with the record than when keeping my own time. I haven't tried it with a 'nome yet.
I don't expect it will be on our list again for a while.
I'm not totally wild about the riff, and not at all convinced I've 'got it'.
Interesting to hear the way Martin played it on the recording he shared last week.
It's been a while since I heard Jimmy Rogers play Goin' Away Baby, but iirc it's virtually identical in form,

Here's my take.

Not happy but this is the backbone of what I've been working on from the Take 1 on Baby Face Leroy version.Timing is an issue for me but it is good training IMHO. I am also interested in the little in-betweeny bits as well.

Thanks for the Jimmy Rogers heads up. Great stuff.

Hey BW, I tried again with the band last night and found I just couldn't get it to work. Pretty sure I did the same thing each time but kept getting out of synch with the guitar, which leads me to think he varies the time based on how he feels it from line to line.
So I listened to the Swedish band Martin shared a few days ago and took the riff he played, then I took my cue from watching the guitarist's left hand instead of listening to him. This worked about 99% and improved the song a lot.
After we played it a while, they said 'should there be a harp solo? What did little Walter do?' I'm not lying, they really said this.
So I played the line I've been trying to fit in there every time we played it for the last 6 months, and they said 'oh, right, yeah that'll do' as if it was the first time anyone had heard it.
Anyway, I expect if they give me a solo we'll be back to the same problem of people playing how they feel rather than a way which is predictably regular, so I'm not fussed about a solo.
Mainly I just wanted to say I'm now playing it the way Martin did and have given up on Tom Ball's example.

SuperBee: That's great! You've really got it. My guitarist Alan has been doing this song recently on his cigar-box guitar and he doesn't know the right way to play it. He never leaves enough space between phrases. And he never leaves exactly the same AMOUNT of space between phrases! Meanwhile, I'm not just trying to keep up with him on harp, but I'm also playing drums with my feet. As long as the groove continues unabated, nobody in the audience seems to mind. I continually adapt on the fly, allowing him to play it as he plays it, but I can't say that we're "together"--although the audience most likely doesn't realize that.

I can't decide to be infuriated at his non-repeatable playing, or to celebrate is as "authentic" Mississippi blues, since the local style often takes such liberties.

Anyway, listening to your version, I'm truly impressed.

Hey Kudzurunner, thanks for the comment.
I'm gonna assume you listened to the recording of me, and not the Baby Face Leroy Trio recording which was posted up near the top of thread (I have taken it down because since thevrecording in my OP was removed, I saw that record could perhaps cause confusion if one read the first couple posts in haste.)

What you describe with Your guitarist sounds very similar to what I encounter with mine. I've taken to watching his left hand. Then I can fit with him.
