I am a long time lead singer and from time to time I have had the same experience and a short hiatus from performing has been good for me too. Normally get back to it reinvigorated and in better voice for it. I just started up on harmonica a couple of months ago and I am sure I will hit those times as well, so it was good to hear your short testimonial. Thanks for sharing that!

Thanks for the post. I'm sure everyone has to find a way to deal with this. Take a break or doggedly carry on regardless, whatever works.

Great post man. Im glad you found it again. Just keep moving forward.

(Sorry for the long post)

Everyone falls into these ruts dont worry. Im currently in one infact. I have been sick with the flu. Had a fever n headaches since Thursday. So i tried to play some last night and again this morning and everything that comes out is just EHHKK. No good.

But i find that what your feeling comes out in your music. If you put a ton of feeling into it, even mediocre playing will turn out pretty good. But the music won't just come out that way on its own. If you want your music to sound soulful you have to put your soul in it. But i think you ve figured that out now.

I think this perticular Rut is bothering me so much because i had been on such a roll for a while. Kinda hit a growth spurt in my playing, i think. So much good playing recently. But as i said last two days ... just no good.

But i find that you have to harness your different feelings and use them to your advantage. Sometimes (like now).. when im playing, it just feels robotic and i have a hard time putting feeling into it the way i normally would. In these times i find learning something new to be the best thing. Because you literally are robotically playing the new song or lick note for note because you dont know it yet. So playing it over n over until its in your muscle memory. Then you can start to play with it and add things. Then start to play it with a little emotion. It kindof helps drag you out of the rut, Both playing the new thing and just the passing of time which it took to learn it. So then when your out of the rut you now have more material. And the more material you have the easier it is to mix it up and keep things going and stay out of the next rut.

Im not sure if you play alot of blues or not. Because of the Shenandoah comment. But i think learning new licks will help you a TON. Also learning new songs. You can take pieces of songs and use them as licks. You can take the rythm of the song and turn it into something completely different. Things like that.

I recommend you use Adams tradebits for songs. Or youtube a specific song. Will Wylde has a few good song lessons. Tons of youtube guys who teach songs.

Ronnie Shellist has GREAT lick lessons. Well all of his lessons are great infact. Check out harmonica123.com. you can find beginner licks lesson, bent licks, 2nd 1st 3rd position licks lessons, theyre great. And they will give you much more material to use.

Ronnie Shellist Lessons

So in short.
Just keep playing. And when you find it hard to play ... Learn. You'll get there.

BTW ... I decided to download Adams "Have A Good Time" Lesson because Ive wanting to learn more of this type of groove. And after talking to BEE recently ive been listening to the Big Walter Horton n Carey Bell Album again. And its a fun song. Don't have many in the repertoire that people would actually like to listen to in an uppy party cituation. Many cool licks to be taken from it.

I also got the Blues Playalong Lesson. I guess i should have got it a long time ago. I didn't really know adam gave advice on how to play on each backingtrack. Haven't got the chance to listen to the whole thing yet. I'll let you know what i think later if you want, but his Lessons never disappoint.
