I've long loved this song, but when I've tried to play it on harp nothing seems to work. Has anyone done so, or have ideas on key/position/etc you could share?
This version from Clapton's "24 Nights" is my reference.
Idk. But you might start by figuring out the opening notes to the bass line on the original CREAM version which sounds to me like it should be playable on diatonic harp. It’s such a well known bass line there’s probably a lot of bass players who would be able to tell you what those notes are.
The version you posted is a more complex arrangement with a keyboard riff borrowed from GLAD (a tune by Traffic). The original Cream version is more accessible, I think.

The Jack Bruce bass intro starts with an eighth note pickup on G then A, C, E, C for the A minor chord then D, D, D, D, D then the walk-up E, G, G# back to A to repeat the pattern.
Sounds to me like the guitarist is playing a variation of that in the live version intro.
You could play that on a G harp:
4+ 4 5 6 6+ 6+ 6+ 6+ 6+ 3" 3 4'

@garry: I agree to listen to the original Cream version of "Badge" as a better reference. It's more dynamic, has the bassline upfront so you can lock in on the groove and figure out the notes. That Clapton version posted is OK, clever and well payed by super duper pros...but kind of toothless, in my opinion. The feel just aint there.
