I've long loved this song, but when I've tried to play it on harp nothing seems to work. Has anyone done so, or have ideas on key/position/etc you could share?

This version from Clapton's "24 Nights" is my reference.

Idk. But you might start by figuring out the opening notes to the bass line on the original CREAM version which sounds to me like it should be playable on diatonic harp. It’s such a well known bass line there’s probably a lot of bass players who would be able to tell you what those notes are.

The version you posted is a more complex arrangement with a keyboard riff borrowed from GLAD (a tune by Traffic). The original Cream version is
more accessible, I think.

The version here is in A minor. A Lee Oskar A minor diatonic works for me. If you are good in 3rd position then a G harp.

The Jack Bruce bass intro starts with an eighth note pickup on G then A, C, E, C for the A minor chord then D, D, D, D, D then the walk-up E, G, G# back to A to repeat the pattern.

Sounds to me like the guitarist is playing a variation of that in the live version intro.

You could play that on a G harp:

4+ 4 5 6 6+ 6+ 6+ 6+ 6+ 3" 3 4'

Lying in bed without perfect pitch no idea of the key, but I think timeistight has the tab right.

Yeah. Personally, I don’t have a good enough ear to transcribe like that.

G harp, Garry, works just fine. Give it a try.

Holy Moly...in all my years playing in all kinds of cover bands, have never come across one willing to tackle this tune!

Would be interested in what your band comes up with if you are able to post here....

Merry Christmas.

This is cued up at the ending chord, but is a couple of minutes into the video.

You could always use a regular tuned circular harmonica in one sharp.

@garry:
I agree to listen to the original Cream version of "Badge" as a better reference. It's more dynamic, has the bassline upfront so you can lock in on the groove and figure out the notes. That Clapton version posted is OK, clever and well payed by super duper pros...but kind of toothless, in my opinion. The feel just aint there.
