Hi guys, anyone out there know what key Kim Wilson plays this in? It's on his Blues and Boogie album. I just cannot figure it out!

A harp in 1st?
It’s 11pm and I can’t spend too long on it but it feels ok to me in 1st.

Ah, Thanks SuperBee. I'd forgotten he does a lot of that 1st position in A. I'll return to it and see if it works. Many thanks.

I’m interested to know if you think that’s right. I just put the disc on and tried to cop that opening statement mainly.

Hi Yeomanthefirst-- "From the Bottom" is in the key of A. Kim Wilson is playing an A harp in 1st position. The first two notes in the harp opening are G and G flat. To get them, you have to work the 3 draw hole.

You can get FOUR notes in this draw hole-- from highest to lowest they are G sharp, G, G flat and F.

Here's how you do them, from highest to lowest:
1. G sharp-- draw hole 3 with no bending at all
2. G-- draw hole 3 with a slight bend
3. G flat-- draw hole 3 with a deeper bend
4. F-- draw hole 3 with an even deeper bend; right to the bottom!

I don't know your bending skills on harp, but you have to be able to hit each of the three bent notes precisely on pitch, at will, any time you need to. This includes starting a song with one of these bent notes. You also have to be able to hold the note, on pitch, as long as you need it.

So... Kim is starting "From the Bottom" with a bent note, "G"; i.e. the slightly bent note in description 2. His very next note is "G flat"; i.e. the deeper bent note in description 3.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

I think Wilson's first note is an A...he starts the tune along with the band on a blow 4...either a blow 1-4 split or he's bleeding in some of the 3 on a blow 4. Then he moves to the draw bent 3, where he proceeds to do some fancy spot on bending as described? At least that's how I hear it.

I’m not near a CD player and I’ve left the disc in the car so I’m relying on memory from 5 minutes before bed, night before last (that’s my cop out excuse and I’m sticking to it) but I recall a descending phrase from 4 blow, fairly chromatic, over 2 measures (V chord and IV chord) followed by a 1 measure lick on mainly hole 2, but played twice but resolved on 1 blow I think.
I think that first 2 measure lick involved 5 notes, travelling from 4 blow to 2draw/3blow. Was it +4 +4 3’ 3’ 3” 3” 3’’’ 3’’’ +3 ?
Followed by 2” 2 2” +2 +1 (+1,2), 2” 2 2” +2 +1

Yeah so no, that firstbphrase is more like +4 +4 3’ 3’ 3” 3” 2 2”

And the other lick is perhaps more like 2” 2 3’ 2” +2 +1, 2” 2 3’ 2” +2 +1

tomaxe is right, Wilson starts the song with either a blow 4 or 1-4 split, in A. He hits that note (split?) twice, then goes on to the note sequence I described. My copy of "From the Bottom" was missing those first two notes... sorry!

Cheers,
