David Fairweather made it out Saturday night (I sure wish a few others had
made it out - it was my first night at a new club and dead as a doornail).
We got a chance to do Harlem Nocturne - he played it in F on the
Temptation harp, and I tried it in E on my valved diatonic. Both worked
just fine (well, mostly :-)

so it sounds like valves or "temptaion tuning". This is the first time I heard of "Temptaion tuning" (JBR)

I had a conversation with Jon Gindick where he said he wanted to play "Harlem Noctern" and was looking for a good way to play it. After giving it a glance, I decided it was more than I wanted to attempt. (JBR)

Here's a 2001 clip from the late Chris Michalek :

Harlem Nocturne is a great song and a toughy on the harp. I've worked it
out in many keys
on the harp and have found the Ab harp to be the best. Bb, G and low F work
well too but
you really need to know how to sustain your overblows with good intonation.
I first tried
the C harp but the range is not there so the lower keyed harps work best.

This is one of those songs that sounds simple and makes you want to play it
in cross harp
or another "standard" position but you'll find a whole world outside the
box.

Good Luck,

Chris Michalek

I saw tabs for chromatic at Harptabs.com, but not for diatonic. I hope this gives you some insight to your goal (JBR)

I've had a lot of fun with this using chromatic's, but I think with a diatonic it would be a real challenge.
If you try, and can find tab for it, lower keys like G or even Bb will sound better and more soulful for this piece, I normally use a G chromatic for this instead of a C as i think it just sounds darker.

I've been learning this tune in D on a C chromatic. I've been trying to break out of Dorian mode and thought this was a good one. Definitely need good OB technique on the diatonic. You need the Maj 7 in D and then it goes to Gmin and you need the b3,so it's probably doable on a G in that key.
