For years, just out of curiosity, I’ve wanted to try playing harp through a Polytone amp. Polytone amps are clean, solid state, classic jazz guitar amps.

Last week, I stopped by to sit in with a jazz trio (guitar, bass guitar & drums). I’m not really a jazz player, but I know a few heads and can handle some modal jazz, hard bop, soul jazz and some other relatively sinple jazz material. More importantly, I know when to just lay out. Anyway, I’ve gigged with these musicians before and have a standing invitation to sit in, so I stopped by. I brought my harps, a cable and my 545 Ultimate intending to play through the PA.

Well, the house PA wasn’t working. So the guitar player, who was playing an ES 175 (a fat jazz guitar) said he’d plug me in through an unused input on his guitar amp. I always carry an IMT, so that was no problem. I handed him my mic cable and asked him what kind of amp he was using. It was a Polytone Mini Brute Mark IV 1x15, so I was intrigued.

The amp sounded wonderful. I was standing too far away to see the settings but I was very pleased with the sound. Very clean, of course, but nicely responsive with a nice tonal character and timbre. I’m not going to run out and buy one, but I certainly enjoyed playing through it,
