A couple rules for registering for the forum... we require that you use your real name in the 'full name' field. We keep this private but it helps us keep spammers/sockpuppets/banned members from sneaking in. It's certainly possible to fool us but not providing your real name is ground for banning if it comes to light. Also, keep your email current. It's how the password retrieval system works (although the autoretrival is broken, you have to contact us at the membership email and I'll reset it manually and you can change it to something more secure later.) I'm willing to go the extra to help someone retrieve an old password but we need some way to verify you are the person who owns the account. We've even resorted to scans of picture ID, but that requires you used your real name. Also, we hand approve the applications so there is a delay between when you get an email that says your application was accepted (I know, the server should be more clear about that, but that's beyond our control) and when you get an email saying that you have been approved. You don't need to apply a bunch of times.

Don't use real people's name as your username unless you are that real person or it's absolutely clear you aren't that person... So, John Popper can register as John Popper. Anyone can register as JohnPopperfan and anyone can register as Robert Johnson because we can all agree that you aren't THAT Robert Johnson. If you are someone famous we may even try to contact you to verify your registration. People do business based on their reputation and we want to make sure the reputation matches with the right person.

We've had a bunch of fishy applications in the last few days... a note to spammers... it's not too hard to get approved to post on this forum. Unless you've been specifically banned before anyone can apply as long as they follow the above rules and don't look like spam.

I don't want to list everything that makes you look like spam, but a lot of it is pretty obvious. It really wouldn't be hard to fake it, but our forum software pushes every new post to the top of the queue which makes spam both more annoying for us, because it pushes real posts down, and less useful for you, the spammer. When they are on top they are easy to spot and we go ahead and delete them and ban you. Since you are trying to get links to stay on the site, well, there are better forums to target that will give you more bang for your buck and be less of a hassle for both of us. I know you have to feed your families, and I've got to try to keep this forum running.

If we reject you and you aren't a spammer, go to the contact page and look up the email and contact the membership email and we'll walk you through getting approved. We check the folders at least once a day.

One last note, I know sometimes banned members sneak back on. Sometimes we don't notice it. Sometimes we do and let it slide as long as people don't reoffend. Sometimes we don't make a big deal out of it because we don't think it's worth damaging someone's professional reputation so we just make a note of it. Rarely we even resort to IP banning. Just note that sometimes it is noticed.

I'm going to keep bumping this for a few days so people can see it.
