The mailman delivered my Bulletini from BlowsMeAway Productions this morning. The product sheet advises "it has plenty of bass, so you may want to turn bass down".

I tried it immediately through two of my amps-- a 40 watt '95 Fender Blues Deluxe (with two ten inch speakers instead of the stock twelve) and a 10 watt '55 Magnatone 109 Melodier (two 8 inch speakers).

The Blues Deluxe has three tone controls-- treble, bass and mid. They can be set anywhere from 1 to 12. I tried it with my usual settings-- bass and treble at 5, mid at 2. It was WAY too bassy. I tinkered with the controls and after a while came up with a beautiful sound. The Bulletini, and my Blues Deluxe, sound great with bass at 2, treble at 7, and mid at 2. I would happily use it at a gig with these settings.

The Magnatone has one tone control, called... "tone". My usual tone setting for the Magnatone is at the 11 o'clock position. I tried it with this setting. The Bulletini, and my Magnatone, sounded great; no tinkering was needed. I would happily use it at a gig with this setting.

Conclusion-- if you use the Bulletini with a big amp, you will want to turn the bass down. That said, I suspect the Bulletini will truly come into its own when paired with a small amp that could benefit from the extra bass this microphone naturally delivers.

Cheers,

p.s My treble settings as set out above (with or without the Bulletini) probably seem high compared to the standard blues harp/amp settings. I've always set the treble higher than what I see recommended in this and other harmonica forums.

p.p.s. The Bulletini was ordered on July 27th and made it from California to the northwest coast of Canada by August 1st. This included a stop at Canada Customs as they pondered what to do about this package coming from another country. Thank you, BlowsMeAway Productions, for promptly shipping my order. Thank you, Greg Heumann, for creating consistently innovative products for the blues harmonica community.

Thanks, Wolf, that’s interesting.
I think advice to cut treble is often as much about feedback as it is about tone, but that message may sometimes be lost.

This is in line with my experiences with the Bulletini. It is great with small amps because it's so bassy.

I wouldn't use it with a big amp, but with a little 5 watt amp, it's a great great mic.

Vintage stuff isn't necessary. Heumann is making awesome new stuff.

So how do you think it’s would it do with low tuned Thunderbirds and similar low harps. Would it be too much Bass, or a great effect?
