I was just listening to Jimmy Rogers’s Ludella album, which is a killer Kim Wilson album, and it occurred to me that if looking around iTunes for good harp albums you would not find that one unless you knew to look for it. Usually when I’m looking for harp albums, I search out records that feature the harp player in the title. But I wonder if there are others like Ludella that I am missing. Are there others like that that shouldn’t be missed? Albums featuring great harp work where the harp player isn’t featured in the name of the album?

Almost anything by Muddy Waters has great harp accompaniment.

"The Blues World of Little Walter" has a bunch of his early sideman work behind Muddy, Babyface Leroy, Sunnyland Slim and JB Lenoir.

Jimmy Rogers '50s stuff had great harp, usually by either Little Walter or Walter Horton. They've been rereleased with a variety of titles.

Otis Spann's "The Blues Never Die" has great James Cotton harp all over it.

I know it is in a different vein, but check out any Willie Nelson album for some masterful accompaniment from Mickey Raphael.

I agree with Timeistight about the Jimmy Rogers and Muddy Waters material but i’d Go further with Jimmy Rogers. For instance, you’ll find Rod Piazza on the Feelin Good album, Billy Branch on the Jimmy Rogers/Big Moose Walker album on Wolf label called Chicago Bound (not to be confused with the Chess album of Jimmy Rogers which has the same title), and the Blues Blues Blues album which is Wilson and Bell mainly but also a ripping 1st position number with Taj Mahal. The Blue Bird album is Carey Bell

There’s a fairly recent Eddie Taylor compilation called Eddie Taylor in Session - Diary of a Chicago Bluesman which has a bunch of 50s stuff with various leaders and harps include Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Snooky Prior, Willie Foster, George Mayweather

Walter Horton is on a lot of records under other people’s names. Maybe easiest is to check the discography of his work, put together by Joe Filisko et al : http://www.filisko.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Walter-Horton-Discography.pdf

I realise thats very general. I’d recommend that Jimmy Rogers Blues Blues Blues album for sure

For something a bit more recent, check out Jason Ricci’s accompaniment to Heidi and the El Cats and/or Heidi Jacobsen. His playing on the songs California (Led Zep cover) and Louisiana is tastefully superb. They’re on iTunes.
