Any recommendations favorite NYC spots for good blues featuring lots of harp? I know Terra Blues and some of the other big names, but I’m wondering about lesser known spaces.

NYC is probably the greatest jazz city in the world. On any given night there are so many choices of all different types of jazz. Unfortunately, blues shows are few and far between. Terra Blues is the only blues venue I know of in the city. I was lucky to catch Buddy Guy recently at B.B. Kings, but that venue closed recently.

Elcoh - BB King's recently closed?!?? I was planning on visiting there for a show and maybe a few mugs of suds. If true, I don't blame the owners, but rather the people running the town. With taxes going up all the time, it's a miracle any establishment can happily continue existing.

BB Kings took that spot about 20 years ago while 42nd Street was pretty sleazy. They were part of the revitalization of Times Square. Now the area is thriving and of course the rents have skyrocketed. I would imagine they will eventually relocate elsewhere in Manhattan. Hopefully!!

I went to a jam on Thursday at Blue Moon Blues Bar in South Amboy, NJ. It is a 30-40 min drive south from NYC but its on the train line.

It was my first time at this jam and it was great. Very accommodating players and definitely a good level of players. I will definitely go back. Food was good too.

There probably are tons of blues clubs left, but they are small, so nobody has heard of them Appalachia! I mean, even up here in SmAlbany I can put my ear to the ground and find shows if I have some time, but that's as someone who is on their own turf and knows a few of the local acts.

The only "blues club" in NYC per se is Terra Blues. There are "blues jams", e.g., Big Ed Sullivan leads one on Monday nights at "The Red Lion" at 8 pm (9 pm on the last Monday of the month) which although guitar-centric has harp players show up. There is a facebook page for NYC blues jams and one-off shows: https://www.facebook.com/groups/498825243481112/. There is a community that hosts a blues dance the last friday of each month. It has live musicians (It's one of my fav gigs to play) providing the medium-slow blues songs that have the dancers undulating! They have a website under "Bluesdance NY". Dennis
