Is there any way to tell looking at the outside of the harp if it's a 364 or a 364S, without playing it. This harp was supposedly purchased in '69 or '70 and has been in storage in the original box and it is in another state... so it's a sight unseen purchase. I can read on the photos all the Hohner (made in Gemany & all) logos & print the key of C but do not know what to look for to tell if it's set up diatonic or chromatic.
Thank you.

The SBS has SBS stamped on the cover plates in big letters, at about hole 11.

PS It's a 14 hole harmonica--the 365--not a 12 hole (the 364).

Oops, you are asking about solo tuned 12 hole, my mistake.

Same deal tho, it's stamped into the CP at hole 11.

The 364 was never made in the SBS tuning, only the 365, and that didn't start until sometime in the 1990s.

The solo tuned 364 has SOLO stamped on the cover, and the box should have something like that on the bottom, where the key is indicated. The ones I have are from later, when they were in vinyl pouches, and have SOLOIST on the labeling.

If you look here:

https://www.thomann.de/gb/hohner_marine_band_solist.htm?ref=intl&shp=eyJjb3VudHJ5IjoiZ2IiLCJjdXJyZW5jeSI6IjIiLCJsYW5ndWFnZSI6ImVuIn0%3D

you can see the words "solo tuning" on the top cover around hole 11. Granted, its a newer harp, but it may be in the same position as the older ones.

I have an interesting 364. No markings indicating Solo or School Band, just 364. Its set up do re mi from top to bottom. Sometimes Hohner made stuff w/out indicating anything w/ stamps on the cover plate or on the cardboard box. This would be a good harp for 3rd pos blues to sound like a chromatic in D. It''s great for melodies. I'm not sure what i'll do with it. It may end up in my curiosity box.
