In an older post the Vox MV 50 amp was compared to the Quilter 45. The MV50 is rated at 50w into 4 ohm and 25w into 8 ohm. Maybe somebody can help me understand how having a cabinet with a Li’l Buddy and a Cannabis Rex, each rated at 8 ohm, results in a 4 ohm potential. What’s the real effect on volume? If I’m looking for a higher powered amp than my current 15 w Super Champ XD, is the MV 50 only going to give me 25w into my Li’l Buddy?

The impedance of circuits with multiple speakers is calculated like resistance with these formulas:

If you wire two 8 ohm speakers in parallel you get a 4 ohm load.

1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 (+ 1/R3 + 1/R4 ...) *

1/Rt = 1/8 + 1/8 = 2/8 = 1/4

Total resistance = 4 ohms

If you wire them in series you get a 16 ohm load.

RT = R1 + R2 (+ R3 + R4 ...) *

RT = 8 + 8 = 16

Total resistance = 16 ohms

*(If more than 2 speakers in the circuit, continue beyond R2 as in parentheses above)

With 4 speaker cabs you can mix series and parallel, and end up with an 8 ohm, 4 speaker cab.

You will not get the full wattage unless you use a 4 ohm load.

If you have the opportunity, I suggest trying an EHx 44 Magnum with the Lil Buddy at a music store with a couple different mics. The 44 Magnum is best at 8 ohm load, and it makes a light weight, loud amp. I have used it in clubs sitting in and on some of my gigs when I didn't bring a tube amp. Light and very loud for its size. A good match for the Lil Buddy.

I posted a demo a few months ago using 4 different mics. Since you have the Lil Buddy already, it would be worth trying to see if it would do what you want.

I actually had the EHx 44 Magnum for a while a couple years ago. Fed it into a Li’l Buddy. I can’t remember why I didn’t like it but I sold it after a few months. I’m thinking the MV 50 might leave me with the same sense so I’m leaning toward trying a Fender Champion 40 and a speaker swap.

I currently have two amps I enjoy, a HarpTrain 10 and a Super Champ XD that can sound close to a tube amp with the right voicing selection. Problem is they won’t cut through the guitars at some of the jams I attend and I don’t always have control over a line out or micing them. I don’t really want to spend the $ for a dedicated 30-50w harp amp nor do I want the weight. Whatever I end up going with and liking, I’ll be sure to post.

I think that the original post you are mentioning was made by me..
Anyway i do have a setup using a Vox MV50 (clean)into a Rajun Cajun /Cannabis Rex wired parallel cabinet.(I found the lil buddy and rex a little too dark a combo)
So i now have a (true) 50W Amp that is reasonably light and portable
The Vox takes a C/M plus a Harp break really well and i am very happy with the setup so far.
But have to emphasise that i use the Vox M50 'clean' model not the one of the other Hi Gain models.
Basically i was thinking of having my own PA and using
technique,pedal, and mike to 'dirty' up the sound.
