I just got an email purporting to be from Adam. The address was very strange and the text box was empty except for a link to a "present".
Uh, no thanks, I didn't hit the link and you probably shouldn't either if you get one.

Yeah, tookatooka emailed me to say that he'd gotten an email. If you got a phishing email from me--i.e., from asgussow@aol.com--please forward it to me, just so I can get a sense of what's going on. You can title it "phishing email from Adam Gussow," if you want.
I did a complete scan of my laptop and there are no viruses. But it's possible that my AOL email was compromised. That happened once about five years ago. The question is if it just happened recently.
The reason why I'd like to see the emails is so I can get a sense of exactly when they were sent.

A friend of mine recently received email from "dougharps" with an odd link. He emailed his concern. I had him check the actual email address on the mail he received, not the "from" label, and it was a different address.
Sometimes part of your email address may be co-opted by spammers to indicate mail is from you without it actually coming from your email account.
I have received email with suspicious links supposedly from people I know, but when I checked, it was not actually from their address.
No odd stuff from Adam, yet...

This email went directly to my spam folder. I looked for it after I seen this thread. I received it at 10:15am yesterday. It simply contains a URL that isn't a proper hyperlink and the from address is mailed-by: siren.ocn.ne.jp extension but the name says Adam Gussow. The list of people it went to is clearly a list of people who follow Adam cause I recognize many of the email addresses as other harmonica players. It's also signed from Adam Gussow. Didn't follow link. Seems like some web crawler got a list of Adam's contacts and sent out junk emails to the list.

I clicked on the link, and it turns out that Adam is the wife of a Nigerian General. I'm helping him smuggle millions out of the country for a percentage. Any recommendations on what amp I should buy with my windfall?

Hi, I have got an e-mail from Adam, but it was a real. He told me that my video won honorable mention in the MBH testimonial competition.
But I've got an e-mail from Ghana that I'm going to get lot of money because my rich relative has died there. I immediately guessed what it was about, but I decided to play his game. The whole story is too long, but this guy thought he could cheat me money. I dragged him for more than a year, at least four messages per month. I do not understand why he stopped contacting me when I sent him my credit card information. My last message to him below:

Couple questions if people want to trouble shoot... obviously you guys all are members here, so your emails are listed in our server. That's one potential source. How many of you are on Adam's other mailing list and how many of you have actually emailed Adam's address before? Also, how many of you have your email listed in your profile (particularly in an easy to scrape format?) How many of you are connected to Adam on FB?
I think the most common way things like this get leaked is just someone forgets to blind copy when they forward an email. Someone gets a copy of the email with everyone's address showing and they just create a similar email address and cut and paste everything over and send out spam that way, but we should see if there is another connection to make sure nothing has been compromised.
