Hi Guys,

I've just signed up! I was wondering if anybody on the forum could offer advice in trying to attain a sound as featured in Canned Heat's "Sugar Bee"? I was blown away by the late great Blind Owls sound in that number in particular. I've never heard that sound reproduced by anyone including The Heat themselves. It has a positively percussive, muted trumpet overtone. It strikes me as being very overworked speaker oriented, but it's just a hunch. Any ideas?

Cheers,

I hadn't thought of that. Blind Owl being an innovator may have given SS was in its infancy back then. I wonder what were available back then? I've never had any success with SS. Thanks Barley Nectar.

I was thinking Pignose, but those didn't come till '73.

I don't think this answers your question but I found this on a Les Paul forum. Sounds like the whole band was using some crazy custom amps:

"Canned Heat used custom built amps called TNTs. They were built and designed by Frank Cooley (RIP) of TNT Electronics back in the mid to late 60s in Venice, CA. Frank was a bug exterminator who also built amazing amps on the side. The Bass amps Larry Taylor used at Woodstock were 200W models, and used 6CA7s. They were based on the Dual Showman tone stack w/ 4 6CA7s and custom PT and OTs. There is not much info about Alan (the Blind Owl) Wilson's amp, except it had black grille cloth and also a Tremolo circuit as well. After Woodstock Frank built a 1000W amp for Henry Vestine and it may have only been used once at the Hollywood Bowl. It was so loud people in the audience were leaving. These were the real deal USA made 6CA7s not EL34s, and could handle a higher plate voltage. Jim Williams of BASSON amps offered this info about Canned Heat and their amps. Jim has a wealth of knowledge on vintage and modern tube amps. thanks Jim!"

Thanks indeed. I contacted the current line up of The Heat and they politely answered me but no info. I think Fito is still the drummer but as such may not have the same interest. I would love a champ 600 but they are not common here in Australia. I am half way through building a small tube head using a 6v6. El84s are much more common here on reproduction style amps and they do clip early. My valve junior is great unit. I can't get my fender running 6L6 power stage to clip even on 12!
